My Mum made me pretty frocks
|
This is maybe a bit of a daft question but one that has been concerning me for a while.
As some of you are aware, I've been having a series of fairly lengthy broadband outages since early October. I want to upload quite a large set of files containing photos to my website soon. This will also involve updating their parent pages and the home page. I have previously use the FTP that comes with my ws design package and had no problems.
Now I'm starting to worry about what would happen to my website if my line went down in the middle of this. Sometimes I'm off line for over a week.
Anyone know what would happen, please?
Regards

Hi Gadget,
Sunny Boy is right, so in theory you should have no problems .......
BUT .... (you knew that was coming )
If you are just changing text, then no problems.
If you have changed a style sheet, then you might have problems if some pages have loaded but not the style sheet.
or if one page has links to new pages, that haven't loaded yet.
As you are fairly certain that you will be having difficulties, I suggest making an "upload plan"
1) load any new style sheets 2) load any new images, before loading pages needing these images 3) load any new pages, before loading any pages with links to the new pages 4) if necessary, try to load files in small groups of related files, to keep things "looking right"
hope this helps, good luck with your connection, Bob

Thanks Bob and Sunny Boy
The style sheet will remain the same so no problem there My new files will be largely images
I'm not quite sure how NOF sorts out it's image files. They are all in an Assets folder as far as I can see.. At the moment, I'm using its Gallery option. The Gallery structure seems to be a parent page containing thumbnails and a series of individual pages for each image. Thsse pages would be linked sequentially I think, all linked to the parent page and to the page before and after. So..........if a link/pointer was broken
At anyone time, for a Gallery to make any sense, I would have to upload the parent page (called Photos on my site) of the thumbnail page, the thumbnail page and all of the individual image pages.
Maybe I'll wait for a High over Scandinavia (calm weather)
Thanks
Gadget

My suggestion: 1) load all the images and thumbnails (no links to them yet, so no problems if interrupted) 2) load the gallery pages, but not the parent page (no link to "start" the chain) 3) last of all, load the parent page. Now you finally have a starting link to the other pages and the images

These ws file hierarchies are just like family trees, ain't they - just make sure the grandparents are last

I think Bob is spot-on here, Gadget. I was just reading your conundrum and said to myself "start at the back", which is what Bob has suggested. This is how I update my site (built in NOF) when I have a run of pages with pictures to be done.
