Website created - now some questions!
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 16:40 GMT (UK) »

I've just uploaded my site to my free space.

However, some questions:

Why do none of the jpeg files display (even small files - e.g. <500 kb)?

Why does any downloadable word doc that I add to my site when creating with FamilyHistorian v 3 (even small files, say just 2 pages of text) not upload? On clicking the link just get a rootschat message to say that the page is lost/unavailable

How do I add a counter (I tried following a posting on this - ie adding code...by editing the index page in the rootschat account manager - on viewing the website - just gives the code - not a counter!)

thanks in advance for any advice

Hi wildfang and welcome

The question I can answer is how to add a counter, please see this thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24883.0.html

Not sure about your other questions except that in the past I have had problems when I have not downloaded the images from the file manager where my site is held to the actual live site.

I am sure some of the experts will know better!

Hi

Sorry to add, I have just reread your message and see you have probably read the link I have just added.

Have you got your code brackets all in the right place?  If the code is showing rather than counter is sounds like one is missing??  <html code> - example

Nice work Kerry!

I just tried following your advice and the counter appeared (far bottom left of screen)

on the other thing...are you saying that if I go to the file manager and upload by browsing, I might be able to bring in my photos?...but where would they go? how would the homepage links get created (I'm a real novice as  you can tell!)

Hi again Wildfang

I'm a semi novice too, learnt by experience so BB or anyone please correct me if I am going completely wrong.

I think you should have a folder called images or such like in the file manager where you put all your images and downloads in a folder called download.  You then upload those folders to the live site.  When you add an image to your webpage it should then link to its place on the live site.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

Hi

Kerry is right, to "reach" anything on your website, whether another page or an image, you need a link to it.

a link for an image could look like this
<img src="file-name.jpg"> but that is the absolute minimum. You will probably need other parameters (attributes) too.

see also Topic: TIP: Adding images (and 'thumbnails') to web-sites
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47486.0.html

Another point: on your home page and "contact" page you have your e-mail address.
Not a good idea, because of SPAM-robots (spambots)
see Topic: TIP: putting an e-mail address on your web site
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47479.0.html
or even better, why not add a form, for people to e-mail you, direct from your site
Topic: Forms for Emailing from site
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,91843.0.html

Lots more tips here:
Topic: RootsChat Topics: Help with building your website.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html

What program are you using to build the site ?

And some more:

when I hover on "Summary of Findings" the address "http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net/summary of findings.doc" appears.

spaces in names are a No-No  Sad Sad Sad

The reaction you are noticing is the RootsChat equivalent of the dreaded "Error 404: Page not found"

rename your file summary.doc, and rename the link to it, and try again.

this should then give your visitors a .doc file for downloading.

Bob

ps could you re-instate at least one picture link, then we can see better what's up  Smiley Smiley

We'll get there, don't despair  Smiley

Hi Berlin-Bob,

If you view the "source" on Wild's page you will see that the link for the St. Andrews Church picture is:
<img src="_h1_St Andrews. Hornchurch 11.JPG" alt="home page picture">

Again, spaces and a . in the middle of the name.

Hi Wild, get rid of the spaces and the . in the name of the file and the link and put the photo in the same folder (on site) as your index.html file
http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net/standrews.jpg for example

And I have sometimes had trouble with JPG when jpg is ok so try and make all file names/extensions small letters. Looking at your 'Table of Contents', all the other links are small letters.

Hi WF,

just had a look at the source code for your home page (right mouse click, and 'view source text')

and I see you have
<img src="_h1_St Andrews. Hornchurch 11.JPG" alt="home page picture">

again, spaces in names are a No-No  Sad

Try again, this time without spaces, and better still, all lower-case.
e.g. _h1_st_andrews_hornchurch_11.jpg

RootsChat uses a Linux server which is not as tolerant as Windows when it comes to file names, so as a general rule:
no spaces and all lower-case.

If you have lots of images, you might want to create a folder img or images and keep all the images together (as Kerry suggested)

your tags will then look like this
<img src="./img/_h1_tt_andrews_hornchurch_11.jpg" alt="home page picture"> etc.
or
<img src="./images/_h1_tt_andrews_hornchurch_11.jpg" alt="home page picture"> etc.

Hi Wildfang

Looks as though you have spent a long time on this, the website looks really good and i'm sure it'll be even better when it's all running smoothly.

The images on your site that are visible are all jpg (lower case) so you may need to change the others as Falcybe & BB have suggested.

Can't wait to see the full version.

Best wishes
