Dear all

Been away a few hours and just logged in again. I really am so touched by all the replies - this is proving to be a great learning exercise. I will surely become an active contributer here myself over time

Too late now to give all of the replies proper consideration/action (TV and wine beckons), but first thought is that it is clear I have a lot to learn about correct format for file naming, etc.

On links from homepage to photos and other word docs - again my Family Historian software created all these fine (I reviewed the site before uploading it to rootschat with FTP Filezila), just once on rootschat I have the issue of no photo display and lost word docs.

First thought - I might rename all photo files as mentioned below, "re-build" my website with FH v 3.0, delete current site and upload new site and see if that has resolved the photo / MS Word doc issues

Did I read somewhere that max file size allowed for a jpeg was 1 MB? Most of mine are around the 1.3 MB mark

will remove email address from site for now

Anyway, keep advice coming!

Thanks

Wildfang

Even if filesizes of 1.3 MB were allowed on Rootschat sites, it's gonna take a long, long while for them to load.  I get the willies if any of my jpgs on my site are over 50 KB.

I have just one image over 100kB on my site (112 KB and it is the only image on that particular page, apart from my banner and menu buttons).  All the others are much less than that.

I suggest you look at ways to reduce the file size for your pictures.  Can't remember if FH 3 prompts you to do that when creating a site.

Good luck

OK  - I've now had a look at all the replies.

I must admit to still being a bit mystified as to what the problem can be.

I have renamed the home page picture file as a single word all in lowercase and have renamed my 2 page word file likewise. I then rebuilt the site and uploaded it.

Again, all links worked and photos displayed when I previewed the site before uploading to RC (ditto in a CD version). But on RC, the homepage photo still does not display and the link to the word doc still does not work.

If it helps in answering my questions, the code in my index page for the photo and word doc is as follows:

<img src="_h1_standrewsforweb.JPG" alt="home page picture">

<A href="summaryforwebsite.doc">Summary of research findings<

(just cut and paste what looked relevant - I may have missed some bits)

Please - any further ideas on what I should do? In the meantime, I will act on BB's advice re contact form

Thanks

Hi WF

The image on your home page is still showing as JPG not jpg. This may be why it is not displaying correctly. Also there seem to be two _

<img src="_h1_standrewsforweb.JPG"

If these are spaces, you will need to remove them as well.

As an aside, if you go into your RC profile, you can add your website there - near the bottom of the page - and it will then appear as a globe under your picture on the left of all posts.

Good Luck

Hi Wildfang,

Did you upload the image and your doc file to the web ??

your webpage is looking for _h1_standrewsforweb.jpg

I tried http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net/_h1_standrewsforweb.jpg
and http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net/_h1_standrewsforweb.JPG in the browser's address bar and couldn't find it.

Previewing on your computer works fine, because the files are also on your computer (but you can't access that from the web)

Bob and Dinie

I simply let my FH v3 software do everything and, as I said, worked OK in the preview. The only "loading" I did was to drag all the files accross to my RC space using FTP Filezila

I thought these tools were supposed to remove my need to know the technicalities of what happens!

I did notce the .JPG as opposed to .jpg in the file manager. I edited this to .jpg but it made no difference. Perhaps, I need to rename the original file as .jpg and upload again? (although, I could not even find a way of seeing the file extensions on my computer!)

sorry to be so useless!

Wildfang

When you load the home page locally, right-click on the homepage picture, and select "properties".  In the box that comes up, the file path will be shown against  "Address:(URL)".  This will help you find out whether it is in a sub-directory - and thus enables you to work out where to load it in your site's file manager.

Hi Wildfang,

As you noticed, you still have <img src="_h1_standrewsforweb.JPG" alt="home page picture"> and I suppose the picture is also with JPG rather than with jpg.

You are right, you do need to rename the original picture. This has happened to me too in the past. Open it with a piccy programme and then 'save as' standrewsorwhatever.jpg typing absolutely every letter and . and make sure the picture 'type' is jpeg.

And don't forget to change the code in your index.htm page.

On Rootschat think small small small and no spaces!!!

cheers falcybe

Dear all

Will try to rename file with .jpg as per falcybe advice and look at directories as per julianb.

However, the two _ and the "h1" are added by FamilyHistorian in creating the site. my home page photo file is simply named standrewsforweb.JPG. So what to do ? - remove the _h1_ bit? I assumed FH3 must have put that code in for a reason?!

I will give all this some more thought, but am beginning to feel I am not up to the task!

Thanks

FH3 may well have put the _h1_ bit in for a reason - probably because it has made a smaller file more suited for loading on to web pages.

I was going to mention NO CAPS at all - but thats already been touched on I see.

I had quite a lot of probelm with capitals until I changed them all to lower case, relinked everything, loaded up and havent had a problem since.

OK good peeps....

I renamed my home page photo file from. JPG to .jpg and it now appears - yippee! even with the strage _h1_ thing.

So still to resolve - why won't the link to my MS Word doc work?? Just get that RC page unavailable stuff. The file name is one single word, all lower case and ending in .doc (NOT .DOC).

for quick reference - http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net

Thanks

Church picture looks great  Cheesy

The word doc won't display on the web.  You could change it into a web page.  Open the doc in word, and then save as web page.  You would have to upload this through your file manager, and change the link on your home page.
