I'm really struggling... despite reading & printing off your guide
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 17:33 GMT (UK) »

I've now got my website, have tried but not getting anywhere...

I've tried via my Family Tree Maker software, but it is taking me to their own website to create my family tree which I don't want as I want it to go to my own website.

I've also tried to transfer my family free maker files from my computer to the website via and am being told they have bad extension?

I've been at this all day now and am pretty much close to tears out of frustration (hate computers getting the better of me).

Sorry, but would appreciate some simple help here...

Hi madaboutbuns,

Welcome to the mad world of web-sites!  Huh
Just to start you off, the acceptable file extensions on rootschat are:
au css doc gedmid ged mid gif htm html ico jpg midi php png psd ram rtf snd sql swf vrml wav wil js

what are the file names and extensions you are trying to upload to your site and what programme are you using to try and put files on rootschat?

cheers, falcybe

Hi - thanks for replying!  As I have family tree maker software 2006 which I upgraded to yesterday I have tried GEDCOM and LST as I can't seem to save my file to any other "extension".

Chris

You need to generate pages in "html" to upload to your webspace.  Does Family Tree Maker have a button for creating a website or webpages?

Hi Chris,

The reason GED is bad is because it is capitals. My first list unfortunately ran ged and mid together (can site admin edit my post please?). This site accepts only small letters and no, absolutely no spaces in file names.

What are you trying to do here? Use PGV which makes a family tree from a gedcom you upload or are you trying to make files from your Family Tree Maker programme, the files of which you would then upload?

someone else has posted but I'm going ahead anyway!!

Hi Chris,

Does Family Tree Maker have a button for creating a website or webpages?

you'll find tutorials here for Legacy

have a look at them, and then have another look at your FTM to see if there is a similar sort of button, or menu point.

Julian
I have FTM2005 and it only allows you to upload to their own webspace, not an external one, I guess 2006 will be the same. You can export Gedcom & PDF reports to other programmes.

Chris
It looks like you will need to create your pages in another programme and transfer info from FTM into that in order to publish it.

There are numerous discussions on here about the type of programme to use. I'll have a look for some links and let you know (if no-one else does so first).

Don't give up, you'll get there eventually - we all did Grin Grin

See BB got there with some links already

I'm trying (which I know is possible... somehow!) to download a section of my family tree software onto my website - which it is telling me are bad extensions.

I have tried via Family Tree Maker and it is pointing me towards creating a website of their own - which I don't want.

Grrrrrrr... I find family history an pleasure to settle into doing and really enjoy doing so that I am doing work for friends, but this... blooming hard work!

If I try and save part of my family tree - to put onto my new website - the file extensions available to use are - FTW, FTM for DOS, GED and FBC - none of which are accepted by my website!

I know I have just bought new family software, but seeing as this is a big hobby of mine should I change to another software?

Chris,

As Berlin-Bob said, and Dinie can come in here too, do you have a menu item on your FTM programme to create web pages (in another place from "uploading")?

Looks like Dinie has already supplied the answer: FTM only lets you upload to their website.

So try this:

- export your FTM data to GEDCOM
- download Legacy (free) (see tutorial)
- import your GEDCOM into legacy
- follow the instructions in the tutorial to create a legacy website.

alternatively, as I said somewhere else (can't remember where), download free demo versions  of as many FH programs as you can find, import the GEDCOM and export to HTML (on your computer).
Then view offline

5 Testing / Pre-Viewing your website

Once you've found one you like, you can upload that to your site.

In FTM2005, under File there is Export File, you can choose to export individuals or the whole file, it then only allows you to save as FTW (FTM file) or GED.

There is also another Export, the choices of which change depending on what you want to export. The choices are Acrobat PDF, Plain Text TXT, Word Processor RTF, Spreadsheet CSV. However, mine only ever has PDF available as the others are greyed out.

Under the Internet options, they are
Create a Family Home Page
Update or Edit my Home Page
Add Tree/Report to my Home Page
Add Picture to Home Page
View my Home Page

Don't know if FTM2006 has any other choices.

I tend to use Edit/copy to transfer my reports & gedcoms into Word or my NOF programme

Hiya,

I would go with Bob's idea above. It seems a pain to have to downlaod Legacy and move gedcoms around but when your information is in Legacy the html web pages are really simple and quick to generate.  (And it is free)

If you want to see the type oftree webpages you can get...

http://fallon.rootschat.net/surnames.html

http://fallon.rootschat.net/4.html

Obviously the information depends on what you want to show and have already loaded. But I like the flexibility.
