Tilt and Bennett in Burstow
« on: Saturday 06 January 07 19:02 GMT (UK) »

The will of Robert TILT, yeoman of Burstow, drawn up in 1659, mentions his son Bennett TILT.  I assume Robert was a widower, as he doesn't mention his wife, and I wonder whether BENNETT could have been her maiden name.

Does anyone have any knowledge of a BENNETT family in Burstow or the surrounding area?  We're talking about Horley and other places that nowadays are around Gatwick Airport.

Hi Bennett

I checked the Surrey Marriage Index but couldn't find a marriage for Robert or Bennett.

Hello Beetle,

Try Worth, Sussex. The IGI has a christening for BENET TILT on 18 March 1826, parents Robert Tilt and Mary.
Batch No. C071361

Robert's marriage appears to also be in Worth, 1st June 1618, to Mary Penfold, so no obvious Bennett connection.
Batch No. M071361

Regards.
Phil

Dear Kerry

Thank you for going to the trouble to search the Surrey Marriage Index for me.  It looks as though there are border problems here, and that the solution lies in Sussex.

Kind regards

Hi Beetle

I am so glad that Forester found the solution for you.  I tried the Sussex Marriage Index CD last night thinking they might be over the border but kept coming up with a disc conflict problem everytime I put the CD in.  By the time I had sorted that out Phil had answered.  There was nothing extra on my CD to what he found on the IGI.

Rootschat is a great team!!!!! Grin Grin

I was interested in your thread because I have Vigars and Roffeys from Burstow.

Thank you Phil for that information.  I think I have been too Surrey-fixated!  Where on earth did they get the name Bennett from, I wonder?  He does not seem to have been in favour with his father, as despite being the only son mentioned he is left only twenty shillings, while his sister's children get thirty pounds plus property.

Kind regards, Beetle.
