Gibson Family « on: Sunday 07 January 07 14:58 GMT (UK) »
It's a while since I posted a plea for help with my Gibson family, so I thought I'd give it another go.
My great grandfather was Edward Gibson and reputedly was a ringmaster in some kind of travelling fair/circus around the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th centuries. His son Bob (my grandfather) was a bare back rider/clown in his youth.
I don't think the family travelled all the time - they seem to have had a base in and around the Liversedge/Dewsbury area, West Yorkshire. The fair seemed to follow a West Yorkshire/East Yorkshire(Hull Fair) circuit, - the family ended up settling in Hull.
The only evidence of all this comes from an elderly relation and from the birth places mentioned on the birth certificates of some of Edward's children e.g. 'in a caravan behind Gillett Street '(Hull) and 'at the Fair Ground in Bradford ' and another which I haven't quite worked out yet: 'Botany Bay, Armley'.
I would think it's highly unlikely I'll ever find any concrete proof - I've tried all the usual websites with no luck. Just wondered if, by chance, there might be someone out there who is also linked to this family.

Hi Jill
What was his given occupation on all the certificates/census etc. that you have found?

He stuck to carpet weaver as his occupation all the way through from age 16 on the 1871 census to the 1901 but on his death certificate in 1942 he was a dock labourer. I'd love to know what it says on the 1911 census!!
