Joshun for a girl?
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 21:12 GMT (UK) »

I have posted in a couple of threads this evening about unusual names, and I wondered if some kind soul could help me with my own unusually named relative.

My 8xgreat grandfather John SWANN appears to have married a girl with the name Joshan. So far I haven't found a record of their marriage but I'll keep looking. Anyhow, I am curious about the name Joshan - it appears to be of eastern European and Arabic origin and is also a boys name. Therefore, it seems an odd choice for a girl who was most likely born in Cambridgeshire in 17th century.

Initially I thought it might be a mistake, maybe a mis-transciption of a name like Joanne or Julian, but I checked further and it is correct, and it was also given to a daughter and several grand-daughters.

So, I wonder if anyone has any ideas about why her parents were so imaginative in their choice of name? Was there a famous Joshan at the time, or did it appear in a book or play? Is it possible her parents came from another country?

Kate

edited to add - ps: any suggestions will be appreciated. If I have some idea of her origins it might help me to know where to look :-)

Kate,

Could Joshun also have been a family surname that was passed down as a given name?

Regards,
