John Sloan is commenorated on a war memorial at Christchurch, Great Broughton. My great uncle was called John Joseph Sloan from Cleator Moor. I know he served in the war but not which unit. Is there a memorial book at Christchurch that lists the dead that may give some information such as age? He was born approx 1875 and would have been in his 40's during the war. I have looked in Whitehaven records dept in the past but have been unable to find him. Cass
Hi Tazzie, thanks for your reply. I think I have found that one before and had excluded him. The reason being that he was down as my great grandfathers NOK when my G grandfather joined the war after April 1915, when this John Sloan died. It could be that he hadn't found out about the death before he joined of course. Another reason was that although of Irish decent John sloan was born in Cumbria and I was'nt sure if he would go to Ireland to enlist??? Cass
Sad looking through them out of 39 J Sloan entries only 5 have next of kin details and so many are age unknown..what little we know about them after such a big sacrifice.
As for the regiments one of my Londoners was in the Black Watch it may have depended on the huge numbers lost by some regiments and the need to replace men in the field.
