Nightingale/Peckham
« on: Monday 08 January 07 19:16 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I have just received a marriage cert for a relative.  One Edward Nightingale marrying Mary Flanagan in the Roman Catholic Chapel, Tonbridge Wells.  Edward Nightingales father is listed as Thomas Peckham, occupation shoe maker.  Can anyone help explain why Edward would have a different surname?  Could it be that Mum and Dad weren't married, if this is the case the only Edward Nightingale I can find is living with a Sarah Williams?

Any help would be appreciated :-)

Thanks,

Cindy xx

Hi Jane,

On the marriage certificate Edward is 26 so he should have been born around 1832.  According to census reports he was born in Chiddlingstone, Kent.  (His wife Mary was born in Waterford, Ireland.)

Thanks for your help  Smiley

P.S  Residence at time of marriage just says Watts Cross Tonbridge for both of them!   Witnesses are no help as they are his father & sister in law.

Thanks again,

Hi Jane,

There are a couple of Edward Nightingales on the 1851 census but no the right thing but am not sure.  I don't understand why his father's name is different unless he was illegtimate and his mothers maiden name was Nightingale?

Hugs,

Hi,

I saw that one too but Edward Nightingales father on his marriage certificate is Thomas Peckham not Thomas Nightingale.  It's very confusing and I wonder if the registrar made a mistake  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Thanks for your help  Smiley Smiley

Hi Cindy

I don't know if you ever resolved this but I would think that perhaps it was a mistake on the part of the registrar if the parents were already married - certainly there is an Edward NIGHTINGALE in the 1841 census (as supplied by Jane above) and the 1851 census of Sundridge with Thomas, a shoemaker, as a father.
