Alice MELLINGS - Newport.
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 14:07 GMT (UK) »

I΄m from Finland but my grandmother Alice Mellings from my mothers side was from The Villa, Chetwynd End. Newport. SA.
Alice Mellings married my grandfather Erik Ruben Karlsson the 11 Sept. 1943 in the district of Wellington in the County of Salop. My Mother Patricia was born the sixth April 1944 in Shrewsbury. They moved to Finland in 46 or 47. Alice Mellings died in Oct 48. Her fathers name was John Charles Mellings and he was a Farm worker.

We have never had any contact from any relatives in England and the most intersting thing to know would be is to know if Alice Mellings had any Sisters or Brothers.

I do not know where i would get this information or if anybody here could help me?

Thank You!
Marcus.

OK, now lets see where this chap was on the 1901 and work back ... BUT, it will be necessary to get those Certs to verify this and further research.

Hi both  Smiley

Welcome to RootsChat Marcus  Cheesy

(can I jump in, Newfy?)

If the John Charles marriage is the right one, then according to Staffordshire BMD, the bride was Emma Elizabeth BENNETT and the wedding was at Seighford St Chad

I only ever think of Staffs and West Mids because that's where my own lot are from  Cheesy

Can you see John Charles anywhere on census, Newfy Huh  Huh

If the MarchJune 1908 Stafford birth is the right Alice, then this might be possible siblings:
John William Mellings Sep 1904 Stafford 6 b 12
Louisa Mellings June 1906  Stafford  6b 6

The problem being, Marcus, that the latest available census is 1901 - before Alice's birth - therefore we couldn't prove that they belong to the same family Undecided

hmmm, the name is predominantly from Lancashire .... none are in Staffs in early 1901 with that exact spelling ... there is an interesting chap in Salop, b1878 Wales tho ....

I think that to continue is guesswork without verifying that marriage and birth ....

I will look at the full Birth Index to see if there are other Alice born 1907 +/-  ..... it may be just a coincidence that a John Charles M marries a few years before her birth in the same county ...

Tati - the Alice I found was 1907, Stoke .... in FreeBMD, is yours from the full index then - will save me looking !

Oops - I saw that the marriage was registered in Stafford therefore I checked Stafford registration district births and found
Alice Mellings - June 1908 Stafford 6b 12
(from FreeBMD)

No worries - its a better fit .... thought I had searched +/-2 years but obviously I had just 1907.

I think its guesswork to try and go further. So on the assumption we have the right Alice ...

1. Need to verify from Alice B-cert that the John we see marrying in 1901 is her father.

2. Need to find from 1901 M-Cert who John C's father was ...

Yes and thank you both for the search!!

This is very interessting.

The only paper I΄ve got is a copy of the Marrige paper between Alice and Ruben, the Birth cert of my mother and a change of adress paper that Alice never sent.

I am going to to visit London and take a trip to Newport in april with my mother who has not been to great britain since she left with her mother 1946 or 47. I wanted to check before if there was any related people for us to contact and maybe visit.
