My g g granddad John Phillips who I now think was born in Stockport in approx 1808. on the 1871. 1881 census next door but one lived Jonathan Phillips with wife Ann according to census Jonathan born Stockport 1826/27 each had sons called George T. and Samuel, (John Phillips father was William) but can't find Jonathan's birth or marriage to Ann. (I wonder if Jonathan is actually John's son)
Anyone help please
Jackie

Hi Jackie
Found this on the 1841 census, hope it helps, but feel it may cause more confusion, with regards to ages in 1841 these were rounded down to the nearest 5 after the age of 15, so John could have been any age up to 29, even this would make the idea of father and son hard to believe. Of course there could have been an error in the transcribing. If you want any more info please ask

Hi Peter
Thank you for the census you are right it is confusing, Jonathan's age is correct as on the 1871 census he is down as 44 so born approx 1827 but John according to his death certificate he was born in 1808, but on the 1851 census it has him down as age 50, did they round up ages on that one as well, there is a William on this and John's father was called William.
Maybe getting nearer thanks to you
Jackie

Hi Jackie The 1841 is the only census where ages were rounded down, I suppose they could be brothers ?

Hi Peter
I think then that they must be brothers, I have now found Jonathan's marriage I think at St Marys Cheadle, 1946 Jonathan Philips to Mary A (hoping this is Ann), will have to see if I can get copy from church records to see who Jonathan's father is. Do you think that the church records from then will be held at CRO.
Thanks again
Jackie

Hi Jackie I did notice that wedding and thought it would be him,you can go through the records office for a lookup but most people would buy the copy of the certificate from http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/
good luck

Hi Peter
Now totally confused the marriage was a Jonathan Higgs Philips to Mary A Johnson (could be a middle name but can't find anything) but his father was John Phillips address given Edgeley, Stockport. My g g grandfather did marry at St Mary's Cheadle.
Tried to find oldest son William who is on the 1851 census as a few months old down as being born in Bury, have found a William Phillips born Bury but not registered until 1852 did they register births so long after do you know?
Thanks
Jackie

Hi Jackie If a family was going to register a birth it was usually done as soon as possible after the birth. Although cival registration was introduced on the 1/7 1837 and was compulsory, many parents,( because there was no penalty for not registering until around 1870 ) did not register the birth, maybe your family was one of these but later changed thier minds, although registered 1852 the certificate should still show the birth date as well.
hope this helps
