chorley mills 1840/50
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 18:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi , my 3xgreat grandmother was a cotton handloom weaver, in Chorley, when she was 9 in 1851. At what age did they start in the mills back then?  By age 19 she was a servant in a house in Liverpool, this seems a long way from Chorley for the time.

Hi,

I think it was around aged 8 in the time frame and they could only work 6 and a half hours a day (Factories Act 1844).  However, although hand loom weaving was a dying trade, a number of hand loom weavers actually had a loom at home (not a mill) and so all the family were involved.

Regards,

Wiki has a good summary of the various Factories Acts

Factories Acts

I find this book a good source on working conditions in Lancashire etc.

The First Industrial Society: Social History of Lancashire, 1750-1850

The first mechanised mill in the area was built at Birkacre, just south of the town, in 1777, and leased to Richard Arkwright. The mill was effectively destroyed in 1779 by a mob of machine breakers, who came all the way from Blackburn, picking up support on the way.

Your ancestors might well have been part of that mob.
