Most people know how I go gaga over WW1 soldiers .......... but this soldier is an enigma ........
It all started when I got this email from France ....
25 years ago, when I was General Secretary of the town hall of LA COUTURE, a village between ARMENTIERES and BETHUNE, just on the western front, I found, among old coins and a button of british trench coat, a piece of metal engraved in english.
Since that day, I search in the british cemeteries of my sector the grave of the man (there are many of them near my home)
In fact, with help of members of the forum and of a new friend from minnesota one day I see I mistaked, the man survived the conflict an go back alive at home Watford / Walford Road, Anfield Liverpool
The memory of this men, that I do not know haunt my spirit, my best wish is to restore the wrist tag to his descent, if it exist, that is very very important for me.
Of course, no money in this history, just to be in peace with my soul, this medal is not mine, it must go back in his real place.
Do you think someone is able to take, in a first time few photos of the house of Stead where he goes back after been discharged in 1918 ? The man in question is ...........
2nd Lt Robert William Stead MGC ... I have a photo of what looks like a dog tag of some sort or a wrist tag with his name and regiment and also he was C of E ..........
I have copies of his service record ...... but would love to be able to give my French friend peace of mind and see if we can get this tag back to it's rightful owners !!
I'd appreciate all the help we can get !! I have asked on the Lancashire board - if the street is still in exsistence .... all thoughts are welcome !!

Thanking you in advance

Hi Annie,
I agree with Retiringtype in the other message that the road name is probably Watford Road http://tinyurl.com/ud84t , behind Arkles Lane which means it's just around the corner from the Anfield Ground.
If I'm passing any time during daylight I'll take a photograph, do we have any idea of the house number?
Although this aerial photograph is a few years old, it gives you an idea of where the street is in relation to the football ground and Stanley Park http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=17672.msg250208 the road near the bottom of the picture, running off the right side of it will be Arkles Lane and parallel to it, but just off the picture will be Watford Road.
The place to advertise for any family members still living will be the Old Pals Section of the Liverpool Echo http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/expats/ which is free to post on there and many people have been lucky in making contacts.
Hope this helps a bit Annie.
Mary
Amended because I typed the wrong name of the road. Sorry guys, not feeling 100% today

Now Annie, you will have to keep posting to one thread instead of two, now Doreen doesn't know that you are interested in memories such as street parties and the Coronation and such, she may well know people who were around in the street at that time.
Hi Doreen, how are you?

Hi Annie
Presumably you have seen this thread on the GWF. It seems Michel has recruited another sleuth before you!

Checking through Kelly's Directories would show when the family stopped living at that address.
