Dear all

I've read the excellent advice as provided by the usual suspects on this topic.

...but I wonder how long it takes for crawlers to do their thang.

I submitted my url to Google only a week ago and, not surprisingly, it is not there yet when I search rush-grimwood or rush grimwood. HOWEVER, what is curious is that my RC profile and links to some of my postings ARE there!

I only submitted url to the others search engines/sites yesterday/today, so not expecting anything from these yet

It takes a while. I think I got Cyndi's list first, followed by Yahoo and then Google.

Rootschat still the best referral though  Smiley

Did you search on "pages from uk" or "the web"?  My resuts are better on the web - because Rootschat FH sites are a ".net" rather than a ".uk".

But it might take a while for google to crawl your  site.  By the sound of it, they haven't yet.  Don't worry, it will all start happening soon  Smiley

Yes, thank you, Madam G  Grin

I have not mentioned it directly, but if you read Section 12 of Bob's tutorial, you will have come across the concept.  In simple terms it is a case of pointing RootsChatters (or others elsewhere) to a part of your site.

For example you might say in a post:

"I have Rush's from Hitcham in Suffolk but they moved to Hornchurch in Essex.  If you are interested, you can read more about this on my RootsChat FH site here - http://rush-grimwood.rootschat.net/ind240.html [shameless plug copyright Paul E]"

I've had my site 3 months and noticed today that it pops up as the 2nd link on a google search for 'Hector Family Tree'. It takes a while but it'll get there.

It is advisable to have a couple of lines in the <head> section of your code like the example below:

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="The family history of Hector and Robins and related surnames.">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Hector, Robins, Robbins, William Levi, Curriers, Family History, Genealogy, Hale, Newman, Wheyment, Wilson, Loveridge, Bailey.">
</head>

This is taken from SaraH's webpage.  Web crawlers will look for these magic lines and index them accordingly.

Alternatively, you can actually have the key surnames on your homepage - this works for me.

It's a matter of choice - but Downside is right - the crawlers have to find something to get you up the search ranks.
