Lost in Ipswich - DITCHAM
« on: Friday 12 January 07 18:29 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I am hoping someone can un-confuse me....

I have the following family on the 1881 and the 1891 census as follows.

1881
Henry James Ditcham, 39
Jane Ditcham, 34, born Ringshall
kids

1891
Henry James Ditcham, 47
Emma Ditcham, 37, born Ringshall
more kids

Now i have the marriage of Henry and Jane in Sept 1/4 1871, gran told me that wifey number 1 dies/vanishes and Henry marries her sister Emma Goodchild.  I can't find a marriage record.

I have Henry's birth record but can't find Jane or Emma's  (although on IGI there is a member submitted record for Emma stating she was born in 1863, this includes a marriage to Henry in 1889).

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Legs

Hi

There is a death on Ancestry BMD - Jane Ditcham age 41, Dec Q 1888, Chelsea Vol 1a Page 255

There is a burial - 10 Nov 1888 Ipswich, Jane Ditcham age 41

I couldn't find a marriage for Henry James Ditcham and Emma Goodchild but FreeBMD has a marriage for Emma Goodchild Dec Q 1889 Ipswich Vol 4a Page 1509.  The male names on same page are James Mitcham/William Wilding - no Henry James Ditcham unless Mitcham is an error.

The Emma Goodchild marriage is on Ancestry Index but there is no marriage for Henry James Ditcham in the same quarter.

Neither can I find a James and Emma Mitcham in 1891/1901 census.

Although member submitted info on Familysearch is inclined to be suspect I am wondering if someone has been this route before and actually got the marriage certificate as they seem to have a definite date.

Hope this doesn't cause you more confusion.

Sheila

Hi,

Thank you Alan and Sheila.

Alan, I think the marriage you found for Emma and Philip Goodchild is too early for my Emma and yes, that is what I found.

Sheila,  Thank you for the death and burial info for Jane, I presume the Chelsea is in London....?  How strange.  Maybe they were on holiday?  But it does fit well with the burial info.

Thank you for the Mitcham marriage also - I agree with you in maybe Mitcham is a mistake and the IGI 1889 marriage is reliable.

I'm stll in the dark as to when Jane and Emma were born.  The census states Jane was born c1847 and Emma c1854.  However, the IGI suggests Emma wasn't born until 1863.

Soooooooo confused!!!

Thanks again for your help

ps. Emma's age in 1891 census, looks more like 32 to me, giving a birth year of 1859 (a bit nearer to 1863)
