The banner which says the space is supplied by Rootschat doesn't conform to W3C regulations (for XHTML anyway).  This brings up problems when using KStableau to create trees as that uses a stylesheet and applies it to all the tables on the entire page.  This style is also applied to the Rootschat bit at the bottom and makes it a strange shape.

I think apart from the tree on my site, which is done using PHPGedView, all of it conforms to W3C regulations.  The only limitation is the bits added onto the code by Rootschat, which throw up errors.  For example there's <p> but no </p> and it's added after </html>.  Firefox says my page has 6 errors (all from the added bits, although 3 of those are for saying the other 3 have been added after </body>).

I suppose it is worth pointing out that one should also validate the CSS code that goes with the HTML code.

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

I've been puzzled for a while as to why Firefox 2.x was unable to display a particular page on my site.  I validated the HTML, JavaScript and CSS but the page just displayed the Title and background colour.  I finally discovered why today, it didn't like the following item highlighted in my CSS file:

.emTableLeft { border-color: black;
    display: table-column-group;
     border-right: solid;
     border-bottom: solid;
     background-color: white;
     width: 280px;
     padding-left: 1%;
     position: relative;
     left: 175px;
}

I commented that line out and magically Firefox dispalyed the whole page content.  It's a historic moment as I've been unable to get any browser except I.E. to render that particular page correctly.  Now, Firefox can display the whole site correctly.

Conclusion:  having a certain line in your cascading stylesheet file can prove fatal to some browsers.

I'm glad you boffins understand it - cos I don't, and I'm not entirely sure I need to.  But if you are doing different types of site then it will no doubt be important.

Just in case people are getting worried, I've tried a few sites out on the W3C validator -

http://www.google.co.uk/webhp - 49 errors

http://www.bbc.co.uk/ - 37 errors

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ - 950 errors

http://uk.msn.com/ - 1 error [goodie goodies  Roll Eyes]

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ - 94 errors

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/genesreunited.asp - 71 errors

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php - 54 errors

Just in case you are wondering http://validator.w3.org/ passed.  As did Wikipedia.  Smiley

I think the above puts the "error" rates for RootsChat FH sites into perspective.  Cool

I could play with this all day   Wink

Unless it is IE 5 6 7..... isn't that right, Berlin-Bob?   Roll Eyes

I must admit that reading this thread has encouraged my to open W3C, sitting in my favorites for months, and check my site, here. The pages worked but I had had a little problem viewing in FireFox a while back that I had already corrected. Over 100 errors to start with on each page but 20 not from my coding and the rest, 99.9% old style coding that I had not brought up to date.

Conclusion, I won't mend future pages unless I cannot read them anymore.

all the best,

Don't worry about them.  They'll only get worried if they lose business from a W3C non-compliant site.  I can think of a lot of other ways they are more likely to lose business, eg bad navigation and site layout, not delivering goods to the customer, insecure site etc

Kerry

I guess you'd have to work from the html pages it produces, and open them up in notepad to edit them.

But back to the serious stuff.  The governemnt sites of Canada, Australia and New Zealand have passed validation with flying colours.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/homepage/fs/en - 1 error

http://www.usa.gov/ -  24 errors

So why is it the USA government's not so good?

More interesting though is:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/  -217 errors

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Fridge-Magnet-Magnate   - 312 errors
