Can anyone help with a location of Mere Corner and the army camp that was near in 1958. I think there was a golf course with one of the green-keepers cottages nearby. Any help so that I can pinpoint it on a map would be of great help.

Hi Adamand - Mere Corner is on the A556 between Altrincham & the M6 junction 19 at the junction with the A50 Knutsford Warrington road. Here's a link
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=373500&y=382500&z=3&sv=373500,382500&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&ax=373500&ay=383500
It's just labelled Mere on the map, but that junction is known as Mere Corner. There's a flag on the map for "Mere Golf & Country Club" who have their own website.
I don't know about the army camp, but it's definitley an upmarket neighbourhood now.

There is another possibility I think.
Mere Corner is and has long been a major road junction.  Consequently it is often given as a landmark.  I think the Army Camp that you are asking about was  that at High Legh which is about 2 miles NW of Mere Corner in the Warrington direction.  The camp at High Legh was built I believe on a golf course and since its removal many years ago has since become a golf course again.

You may wish to try ROOTSCHATs Military Experts on their board  Smiley   You may well find they can give chapter and verse of who occupied it, when it opened and when it closed.
