Does some SKS have baptisms for Truro in approx 1831 please?
I am seeking the baptism of Thomas Emery, son of Tobias/Thomas and Mary or Mary Ann around that period.
This man has driven me mad for years so fingers crossed someone can find him for me.
Many Many Thanks

Hi Debbi
I have tried looking for Thomas and even a Tobias Emery in the 1841 and 1851 census (to see if we can find his family)....... to no avail. There doesn't seem to be many Emery's in Cornwall let alone Truro.
Do you have any other details? Did Thomas , b abt 1831, have any siblings that you know of?

Hi Deb,
Tobias died in 1846 in Watchet Somerset and the burial stated of Othery. His wifes name was Mary or Mary Ann.(just got that info)
Thomas gives Truro for every census year but one when both his and his wifes place of birth are differant from all other census.
I cant find Thomas on 1841/51 either.
I have two siblings for him which I found in the parish records of Somerset.Mary Ann b 1829 Othery and Hannah in 1825 Wellington.(online records)
Thomas was not in either parish.
Thanks for your help Deb.

Hi again Nooshie
I have just looked at Thomas, b 1831, on the 1871 census. I think that he and his wife Mary are still stating that they were born in the same places as the 1881 ,1891 and 1901 census. I think that the way the ennumerator spelled "TRURO" was the way he heard it. Mary was born Willaton, Somerset ...I think that the way it was spelled in 1871 (ie: Wilton ), was also a 'hearing ' mistake.
By the way Tobias Emery's death was registered in Willaton , Somerset in 1846.
still looking for him in 41 and 51

Nooshie???
You are nearly right with the place names.Infact its Wellington where Mary was born .I have traced Marys(who married Thomas) line way back.
Re the burial...I have the death cert thats how I knew he was buried in Watchet and the burial entry led me to Othery and Mary Anns baptism.
Thank you for finding Hannah.Thats one more price of information to add to the little I have on them.
I have no idea where Tobias and Mary (Ann) were born as Tobias died before 1851 and I cant find Mary (Ann).Although the burial did say 'of Othery' I did not find a baptism for him there.
Thanks you for your help
Debbi

Hi Debbi
So sorry about calling you "Nooshie"....
I did manage to find them in 1861 and I see what you mean with PoB changes. I wonder why Thomas said that he was born in Plymouth in 1861 and then changed it to Truro, Cornwall from then on?
Thomas and his parents are proving to be really elusive (ie in '41 and '51) ...I will keep on looking. I was also wondering if maybe Mary (Ann), wife of Tobias, may have remarried after he died?

Hiya Debbi
Okay .... now your Thomas b abt 1830ish is driving me mad!
Just a couple of questions that may help in searching...I am sure you have done the same searches as I am doing , but who knows maybe something will pop up
*who did Thomas Emery marry and when and where?
*Did Mary (b 1830, thomas' wife) have family still alive in 1851? Would she have maybe gone home with them after Thomas died?
I thought I had found Thomas and family in 1861 but now looking at it further I am suspecting not! The one I found, all of the children's ages and the wife's age work out but Thomas ' age is off by 10 years. REF RG9/1849 fol 123 pg 14 (What made me think this was the same family is that Thomas was a hatter).
errrrr...... after rechecking the censuses I have now forgotten all my other questions.

Morning Deb,
Thomas married Mary Stevens in Exeter in 1863 by which times they had 5 children!!!
Did you mean Tobias wife Mary? I have no idea where she went after Tobias death or even if she was alive when he died as the name on the death cert could be either his wife or his daughter.
Thomas and his wife are in Crediton on 1861.
Many Thanks
Debbi
