parish of bambara
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 16:35 UTC (UK) »

I have a marriage record for William Rutherfurd parish of Yetholm and Agness Mills parish of Bambara married 26th April 1777 in Yetholm. Am I correct in thinking that Bambara is a misspelling of Bamburgh and that Agness Mills came from the North of England ? . Or is there a parish in Scotland called Bambara. I googled it and all I got was an African language/tribe called Bambara.

Hi Mike,

Nothing is showing up on genuki for that spelling.

It is possible that it's Bamburgh - people around here pronounce it Bambara and anyone unfamiliar with the name (or the accent) could have misunderstood.

It would be worth looking into.

Thanks Christine , I had come to the same conclusion but as some of the parish names from Roxburghshire have changed over time I thought I would check. Now I have to find Agnes Mills in the Northumberland records.
