Littledale Lane was off Quay Street, so would have been in Holy Trinity parish. Having said that, St Nicholas's church was actually closer.

Hi oonagh,
Oh dear, sounds terrible, obviously being a Captain didn't mean having money, unless it was different in 1811!!

Hi,
His name was George Cowell and his occupation was Captain (in 1811 his ship was the Susannah).
My sister has his log book from 1804, but unfortunately very few documents remain, not enough to build a picture of his life, if I remember correctly his ship at that point was called Bluebell.
The log book was passed down to my grandfather who was also called George Cowell.
At this moment I don't know where he was born, when, if married or who his children were. I'm trying to find the missing years between him and my greatgrandfather, Edward Cowell (my grandads father who turned up in Glasgow)
Thanks
Anna

Oonagh, thanks for the link, I think i'm a bit stuck now ! Just searched the IGI parish churches that Geoff mentioned - thanks Geoff - (I used Hugh Wallis' website), there seems to be several Cowell's but none I can link to him.
Like all of my ancestors, they seem determined to remain elusive
Thanks
Anna

I saw that one but I was trying to work back from Edward, I found an Edward b. 1864 (the year my G Grandfather was born), it said his fathers name was John, I then tried to find a John born in Whitehaven with a father called George but there could be another generation in there.
Anna
PS You are too quick for me - everytime I post a message people have already replied to the last - my apologies if I seem too slow !
