Kia Ora from New Zealand For some time I have been searching for my WILLIAMS family with a deep suspicion they had moved from England to Canada! NOW I have proof! It shold be noted that I am tracking forwards -I have the historical data.
Elizabeth Mary Burgess married Henry John WILLIAMS in England in1894. In 1901 the family can be found in Watford with 3 out of their 4 children viz John Francis RJ 1895 Arthur Richard 1900 Violet Lizzie S 1901 Henry Burgess 1903 - arrived later! I now have the marriage cert of Henry Burgess Williams in Maine April 1934. It states that his parents Elizabeth Mary & Henry John are resident in Canada.
I have heard whispers of the Detroit crossing...is there a kind soul who could check this for me for the above family in the 1930s?
And advise me how I might find possible deaths particularly of Elizabeth (born 1865 Toronto) & Henry (born c. 1862 Somerset England) ? I'm guessing they headed for Toronto where Elizabeth was born?
Very grateful for any help- local knowledge is invaluable! Thanks Marlene (New Zealand)

Marlene,
Since the couple was in Maine, I would look first for their family in New Brunswick, because it is so close.
The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick has a lot of information online (BMDs, cemeteries): http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default.aspx?L=EN
The Charlotte County, New Brunswick GenWeb Site also has a lot of data online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcharlo/
For Ontario, there's the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid: http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/homepage.html
Ontario death records on Ancestry.com only go up to 1932.
The Toronto Public Library has a look-up service. They can check city directories, etc. Here's their website: http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/uni_can_index.jsp
The Toronto Star has digitized its newspapers and they are searchable for a fee: http://thestar.pagesofthepast.ca/
I'm glad the couple in Maine was yours!
Regards, Josephine

Marlene,
I had another thought.
Since the Maine State Archives has the death records online for Henry Burgess & Sophie Williams, and they both died in Rockport, you could ask the local library to look up their obits for you:
http://www.rockport.lib.me.us/
Perhaps their obits might mention any nieces or nephews and where they were living. Any clue might help.
Regards, Josephine

This may be worth a try, especially if you are close to a Family History Library.

Marlene,
I've had a better idea.
You could write to the library and ask if there was a write-up on Sophie & Henry's marriage in the Rockport newspaper. That might tell give you information about his family.
The marriage record that you have from the State of Maine should indicate if the marriage was conducted by a minister. You could write to the churches in Rockport to see if they have any info on their marriage.
I see that there is a volunteer for Knox County, Maine at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness: http://www.raogk.org/maine.htm
Perhaps that volunteer might be able to find a write-up about the marriage if the library can't do it.
Regards, Josephine
