POLAND: How Do I Find My Polish Roots
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 16:40 GMT (UK) »

Hi Everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read this.

My father come to England from Poland after WWII.  Has anyone any suggestions or know of anyone that will research in Poland for me.  The area I am interested in is east of Bialystok.
Also my father had two older brothers who served in the Polish Air Force.  I do not know their christian names but have father's and mother's names and where they were born but do not have a year when born, can only approximate.  I would like to try to find out if they survived the war or not.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Been on a few polish web-sites but not been very useful.

Thanks
Jellybaby

Hi I to had a Father who came from Poland after the second World War, in my case he was a displaced person, in my searches to find out more about his past I have come across a lot of web sites.
I am listing some here in case you find them useful, I must add that I have not used any of these just collected them for when I pick up my Polish reseach again.
Regards
Carol

You guys should try:

http://www.polishforums.com/

Go to the genealogy section and someone will help if they can.

If you need a translation they can do that too.

It's a Polish web-site in English.

Thanks for the site Kaja.  I have had a quick look at it and am now going to register.
Here's hoping someone can help.

Hi,

Depending on how far east the area was in relation to Bialystok, it might not be modern day Poland.  Do you have other details as to the location?

http://www.multimap.com/maps

Someone else posted the website for determining what archives holds the records for the time period and location that you need.  But narrowing down the specific location will really help.

http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=en

The various archives have websites, and many of them are translated into English.  But if you contact the archives, it's best to do so in Polish.  For sample letters:

If you find the area is in Belarus, here's the archives there:
