George Mckenzie born 27th October 1872
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 17:12 GMT (UK) »

George Mckenzie was born in Urquhart and at some point lived in USA.  He married Nellie Falconer on 14th August  1893 (no proof). He was living in Elgin at the time of the 1901 census  He died 2nd July 1917.

He had at least four children, two born in USA.

As he ran the Commercial Hotel and owned the Bakery in Burghead from the early 1900s and was a councillor I wondered if anybody could add anything to his life.  I have his obituary from the Northern Scott and a photo of his grave.

His daughter Isabella married Donald Stewart who was the Station Master at Alves.  I have his death date and a photo of him from the little book Snippets of Alves (great book).  Do you think another one will come out relating to 1950s onwards.  Apart from a photo which might be Isabella again from Snippets of Alves  I have nothing about Isabella.  Can anyone confirm how many children he had.

Any additional information would be great.

Chers

Thanks for that.

I had written an email to the Commercial Hotel where he had connections early 1900s but for some reason it kept coming back at me.  I am going to try again and if that still does not work I will try the ordinary post.  I wondered if they had any knowledge of previous tenants.  It is worth a go.  He was a councillor so you would think there would be something somewhere!!

Thanks

Hi Betty

Just a thought. If George and Nellie had children in Scotland, their birth certs. should include details of the date and place of parents' marriage. Something to work on.

Regards.

Thanks for that.

Their wedding took place in America in 1893.   I only knew that from someone who had it in the family bible but I have since seen it on one of their son's death certificates.  Good idea though.

I have dates, sailings etc, but I am now being greedy in looking for a photo or anything relating to George and his family.

Thanks

Hi Betty the Heritage centre is run by Moray district council so i would have thought he being a counciler they might have something also have you tried looking on the Moray libindex? it is also a useful place to try and again part of the coucil site
I have just entered in George McKenzie in the libindex and got 149 ,
I have a lot of websites for the area, but most i dont think would be of use, unless the aberdeen and N E Fhs have any thing, which gives me a thought will go look for a chaps details and if i find them will pass them on to you he has done a lot of books on the area, and his wife is a prof genealogist, I spoke to him once on the phone and he was most informative.

Thanks for helping.

In Libindx George Mckenzie is ref. no. NM 108234, wife Helen NM108564, son Charles NM106627, son NM108279, daughter  NM109047 and a couple of grandchildren.

The obit. reads as follows.Death of Councillor George Mackenzie, Burghead - Councillor George Mackenzie baker and fish merchant, Burghead died at his residence, Granary Street on Monday afternoon after a weeks illness.  Deceased, who was about 50 years of age was a native of Urquhart near Elgin.  He took over the Commercial Hotel, Burghead a few years ago selling it when he purchased a bakery business.  Councillor Mackenzie was elected to the Town Council and has been Convener of the Water Committee since his election.  He is survived by his wife, a daughter and four sons.

The obit might help with finding anything about him.

As I say I have all the usual stuff including photographs of headstones.  It is just that bit extra I am after.  I am never satisfied!!

Thanks again.

Betty

PS I have not tried the Heritage Centre yet.

Did you get that all from Lib-index?
You are more than welcome for the help,
I have not traced Buces details yet i will have a look shortly, I also have the reprint of the original Lands of Moray , moray architecture, and a few others as well as the ones i mentioned earlier, but will have to look them out and in paticular the lands of moray is written in the old form where a S lookes like am F and is pretty hard going to read,
I have got to admit Morayshire I am very passionate about in paticular
Finhorn which is the village before Burghead,
I dont know if I have photos of Burghead, taken with in the village its self but I definatly have some looking across the shore line from Findhorn to Burghead.
Ok just off to see if I can find the contact detail for bruce
You will find Graeme Wilson and his assistant Margaret at the herritage centre most helpful but may take a little while for them to reply as this time of year they are very busy.

Hi

I find Libindx a great site.

Last year we visited their quarters and as you say they are very helpful.  I got as much information together before we went.  It was like a military event.  We had a whole load of things to do so I had listed them all.  Extracts from newspapers, visits to cemeteries etc.  We paid a visit to the Commercial Hotel in Burghead hoping to find out something about it but most of the staff were off as there had been a party the night before.  We just ran out of time.

I wrote to the Heritage centre today but as you say it could be a while before they reply.  I know they are in the same place but is the Heritage Centre and Libindx the same.  Is Libindx just the name for the Centre on the internet.

Regards

Betty

I know Burghead as we have spent many a holiday there and we used to go sailing at Findhorn in the early 70s.  I was brought up in the Alves/Elgin area.

bare in mind they are professionals, but when I spoke to Bruce I was asking about books and if he had any on particular information I am not sure where you are if in the UK, but where it has the contact details it also gives there phone number, which is where i would have got it from to phone him, the site also gives a list of the books he has published.

Grin Hey got too birds with one stone here helping you jogged my memory about the book i had been asking about  Huh don't know how long ago that was, but finding there site for the detail i checked his book list and there is the book i was waiting on  Cheesy
Aberdeen & NE Fhs if it helps this is there site, and how i found Bruce's details
 http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/

The herritage centre started the Lib index along time ago I dont know when they put it online, but like the LDS alot is submitted, and it is always a good idea to check the infor for yourself, I subbmitted alot of my family stuff to there recently, but what i did not know because my great grandfather was born in Findhorn his wife ( who was his 1st cousin) married and lived in Glasgow through the lib index I found that her obit was published in the Northrn Scot, and that she had a half sister , so it has helped me now end

is the Heritage Centre and Libindx the same.  Is Libindx just the name for the Centre on the internet.

LIBINDX is the Moray Heritage Centre index. It has been running for almost 30 years, but only went online fairly within the last few years. Obviously there is lots of material in the Centre which isn't included in the index. For example LIBINDX would tell you that an obituary exists, and where to find it, but would not contain the full text of the obituary.

I prehaps Should have made that a little clearer incase it was read as I found the obit in the libindex, to I found out that the obit had been published in the Nortern Scot through the Libindex. I Did not Acctualy READ the obit on the lib index.
However a copy of which i obtained through the Heritage Centre.
