If you have photographs like this, it's worth looking at them closely. They say a lot more than is immediately obvious. The body shapes and body language say a lot more. The shapes show family relationship and the body language shows something in the past. Note the two women similarly dressed sitting. I am sure these two are sisters. The one on the left should be Hannah Griffiths (Nee Richings) widow of my Grandfathers brother William. But there's a big problem. I know she was buried at St John's Cinderford, her daughter Lilian said so. Then she's missing from both the 1891 and 1901 Census. I have gone through the St Johns Burial Register and there are only 2. 1 in 1892 and the other in 1941. The latter also has a Will and no one recognizable can be seen. William and his children are in the 1891 and 1901 Census, but not mother. Did they separate? or did she die in 1892? If the latter who is the woman in the pic. There are also spooky things. William was a London City Missioner. His last place of work was Iver, Bucks. He was there in 1901 with children except for Wilfred who was with George Wooles in Gloucester, wifes maiden name Richings (Surprise, surprise). I lived from birth 1943 to 1958 in Wexham, Bucks, 2 Parishes away from Iver.

Then, Kate Grail does'nt look too happy does she? Very good reason. She was 2nd wife of George Grail (1868 - 1944) Standing extreme Right. They lost 2 Sons in Great War within weeks. Clifford Grail, son of George's first wife, Captain and Company Commander was shot through the head at Gallipoli, Kate's son Stanley was seriously wounded in the leg, followed by amputation and subsequently died of wounds. The whole gory details can still be read in the Lydney local newspaper.

Thanks for the King's Arms pics, nice to know the place is still going.
As for the Ducie Arms this is the extract from Gloucestershirepubs website so I think its probably not there as there's no tennant shown after 1906:-
Ducie Arms, Longsmith Street
The Ducie Arms was probably once known as the Bolt. A report in a local newspaper (date unrecorded but c.1906) describes the Ducie Arms as "being frequented by women of bad character... that drunken persons were seen coming out at closing time, that there was filthy language, fighting, general disorderly behaviour and indecency outside."

1885 Mrs Jane Taylor

1902,1906 Frederick Ernest Miller

My husband's relation was Mrs Taylor, hopefully it wasn't such a bawdy house when she ran it.

I am the son of Irene (nee Griffiths) the daughter of and Lester was my uncle. My mother died in 1983.

My uncle Lester served in the Royal Engineers attached to the Indian Army thoughout the war, only returning in 1946. He never forgot his time there.

But I know nothing of a Jack .....
