Hi,
Would it be possible for someone to check the above Census Records for William Price Barrett b c1830 in Bridgeworth(Bridgenorth?) and Caroline Haines b Chetton 2/12/1827. Walter and Caroline (my paternal Great Grandparents) married at Easthope, Districe Church Stretton on 18 June 1850. I believe that their first son Henry George Barrett was born at Madeley in the December 1/4 of 1850 but at this stage I have not yet proved this. I have had some difficulty tracing the parents of these two and also the date they came to Australia, by checking the Census Records I am hoping to get some new leads.
Thank you, Tissy, Australia

William in 1841
1841 HO107/923/1 12 17 St Leonard, Shropshire High Street Elizabeth Barratt, 40, Housewife William do., 18, Grocer S? K? (or n.k. for not known?) Atkins, (female), 32, Theatrical, not born in county Thomas Atkins, 12, not born in county Eliza Barratt, 14, Dressmaker Thomas do., 9 Benjamin do., 6 This looks like his christening on the IGI: William Barrett Christening 15 November 1822 Saint Mary Magdalene, Bridgnorth Father Samuel Barrett Mother Elizabeth
Other children christened to the same couple: Elizabeth 1 Sep 1822 Eliza 9 June 1827 Benjamin 1 Feb 1835 Thomas 1 Feb 1835
However he's plain William, not Price. Wonder if it's the right chap

Hi Tissy,
Tati seems to be doing a great job for you.
I'll add the 1861 census.
RG9/1850 1+ Enum. District 7. Folio 25B. Sch 69. 8/9 West Castle Street, Bridgnorth. Boarding with a EVANS family. Elizabeth BARRETT, Bdr, Wid, 65, Formerly Laundress, Kington, Herefordshire. Benjamin BARRETT, Bdr, Un, 26, Boot Closer, Bridgnorth, Shropshire.
In 2003 I was approached by an Elaine who perhaps was researching this same family. Would you like me to try and contact her?

Hi Tati and Gwynne,
Thank you both so very much for all your valuable information, now I definitely know that William, Caroline and Henry were still in England as at the 1851 Census date. That narrows down the searches of the shipping lists a little. Now I only have to search between March 1851 and August 1855 when their second Son Samuel Haines was born in South Australia.
At this stage Tati I'm not sure of William Price's birth date as I still have not found his death for sure. I am waiting on a death certificate for the person I think is him but until I get that and find out how old he was when he died, I am a bit stumped. The age of the William you found christened in 1822 certainly fits with the Census and the area so here's hoping.
Gwynne I would love it if you could contact Elaine for me, I'll just add a little more information so it will be eaier to identify the right family. William and Caroline had four sons to my knowledge, Henry George c 1850, Samuel Haines b SA 16/08/1855, Arthur Ernest b c1857, possibly in SA and my Great Grandfather, Walter Barrett b 19/10/1859. Walter married Emily Sarah Hall at Dry Plains, South Australia on 02/08/1882. There may have been another son, William, born between Henry George and Samuel. This branch of the family has had its fair share of brick walls.
Thank you both once again, you have given me far more than I had hoped for.
Regards, Tissy

Hi Tissy,
In addition to the 5 children that Samuel & Elizabeth christened at St Mary's, Bridgnorth, I've found and connected another son, Christened at St. Leonard's.
Christened on 8 June 1825, Samuel, son of Samuel & Elizabeth BARRETT, Groom of Listley Street. So the parents details are identical to those for the other children that were Christened at St Mary's. This Samuel chr. 1825, married Elizabeth PRUNELL on 14 Dec 1851 at St Mary's. Details of their children are available. The other researcher I mentioned, Elaine, is descended from this line. I don't believe she knows of the other 5 children of Samuel & Elizabeth.
Just to add to the information available from the IGI about the Christening of the 5 children at St Mary's. When Elizabeth & William were Christened, their father Samuel was a Groom living in Listley Street, Bridgnorth. When Eliza, ditto, was an Ostler. When Benjamin & Thomas, ditto, was a Publican. The Parish Registers don't list any other children in addition to those on the IGI.
In a 1834/1835 Trade Directory - Samuel BARRATT - Retailer of beer - Listley Street. No listing for him in the 1840 and 1842 Directory.
So perhaps he did die prior to the 1841 census when, as you know, he wasn't with his family. No burial found in the two main Bridgnorth C. of E. church registers for Samuel (Snr) BARRATT between 1834 and 1851. We needed that to determine his Christening and parents.

Hi Gwynne,
I cannot thank you enough for all the information you have sent me, as I said previously, this branch of the family has given me a few headaches and yet, in a matter of days, so many questions have been answered.
I have just looked on the IGI to see if I could possibly pick up Samuel & Elizabeths marriage or his death but to no avail. As you say, we need those details to find out more. There was one death listed before 1839 where the spouses name was Eliza Ward but it was not in Shropshire. Knowing Elizabeths maiden name would be a great boon.
I have had a response from Elaine, thank you for contacting her. I am about to reply to her now.
Gwynne, if there is ever any research you want carried out in Australia please let me know, I would be only to happy to return the favours you have done for me. I have a lot of BDM CD's and I also have relis and friends interstate who have access to the State Libraries and they often do research for me. I live in country NSW so it is a bit hard to get to the cities so I rely on the Net and CD's for most of mine.
Thanks once again Gwynne.
Regards, Tissy (Di)

Hi Elaine,
It is really great to meet you. I would love to Email you direct, can you tell me how to hide messages on this site please so that I can give you my Email address.
I have a fair bit of info on the Australian side of the family and I'm finding more each day. I have only just gotten back to the Barret side, having concentrated on my Fathers Fathers side for quite some time.
I can't believe that this site has eluded for so long, but I am certainly glad that I found it at last. Hope to talk to you soon.
Regards, Tissy (Di)

Hi Gwynne,
Thank you so very much for finding William for me, as the saying goes, "your blood is worth bottling". This information will make it just that much easier to find William's movements here in Australia. Unfortunately there were quite a few William Barretts in South Australia all born within a few years of each other but his Christening details will help immensely in sorting out which one is ours.
Thank you once again Gwynne for all you have done, I appreciate it very much.
Regards, Tissy
