Hi guys,
This one is a big ask, and hopefully someone is up for a challenge!
I have just recieved a marriage certificate today for a young lady called Matilda Porter who married in 1844 (and just when I thought that I had this family sorted out ) it says that her father is not who I thought he was.....to cut a long story short her father (who I thought died as a baby) is one Joseph Porter, plasterer. The certificate does not say that he is deceased so I am hoping someone can find him on the 1841 or 1851 census returns.
The only information that I have (or think I have) is that he was christened in Cathedral St Peter, Sheffield Yorkshire in 1790. I believe that he may have married in 1813 in Marylebone, London (I think to Jane Abey). From his daughter's marriage (in Holborn London) his occupation is given as plasterer.
So hopefully there should be a Joseph Porter b. Sheffield Yorks, plasterer living in or around London (though family was also in Wiltshire, Nottingham and Kent) in 1841 and 1851
Sorry it is a messy one but I would desperately love to sort this lot out
Thanks so much
Jenny

The only Porter, occ. plasterer, in the Marylebone area, that I could find, is this one (brother of Joseph?? or totally unconnected??)
Union Street, All Souls and Trinity, Marylebone Matthew Porter 40 Plasterer Y Soph 35 Y Matthew 15 Y Mary 12 Y Soph 6 Y Ed? 1m Y
Do you have Matilda on all the censuses? If not, we could try and find her in 1841, before her marriage, hopefully with her family? Whats her year of birth?
Catherine

I found that one too, but not sure if thats the right one? On the 1851 census, shes married to John Singleton, plasterer, and her age puts her yob c1821 Islington, if I remember correctly
Cant find any others though

Hey guys,
In 1841 she is with her aunt and her cousins in Wiltshire, hence I thought she was one of their children at first
1841 census - Back Street, Trowbridge, Wiltshire (HO107/1182 Folio 12/12 Page 17)
PORTER Jane 36 Y (Yes born in County) PORTER Matilda 20 Y PORTER Jane 12 Y PORTER James 10 Y PORTER Henry 8 Y PORTER William 6 Y PORTER Charles 4 Y PORTER Emma 10 Months Y SANGLETON John 20 Y Apprentice Plasterer
Her prospective husband is also there (misspelt but there)
That is her in 1851 with her husband John Singleton in Essex.
What I was hoping was that she was helping her aunt, who had recently given birth, and her husband is off in Somerset working. I thought that maybe her parents and siblings might be somewhere nearby??
Likely places are Salisbury Wiltshire, Nottingham, Holborn London or Folkestone Kent. Her uncle and family are in Folkestone in the 1851 census, but when I found them I don't remember finding a Joseph at all......
Her dad might be listed as a builder, contractor, plasterer or any of the building trades, they seem interchangable....even had one listed as a stair builder once!
Any ideas would be great
Jenny

Oh, and Matthew is not a family name or in any of my records but might keep him handy just in case, they are supposed to be a big building family
