Hi, I'm looking for the birth of a William WEAR in Cumberland. I haven't been able to find him in the IGI.
In the 1861 census he said he was 37 (& so, born around 1824) & was living at Bardywell Steps with his wife Mary Ann & children. It says he was born in Whitehaven.
In the 1871 census he was at the same address & said he was 55 (& so, born around 1816). This census says he was born in Workington.
In the 1881 census he said he was 63 (& so, born in 1818). This one says he was born in Whitehaven.
I haven't been able to find him in the 1851 or 1841 censuses.
I found his obituary which says "On the 17th Apr. 1882, at Bardy Steps, Whitehaven, Mr. William WEAR, labourer, aged 61 years" Which means he would have been born around 1821.
But the BMD 2nd quarter 1882 vol 10b pg 368 says that he was 64 when he died. On closer inspection of the image, it could be age 61, which would mean he was born in 1821 if he died after his birthday or 1820 if he hadn't had his birthday yet.
So, if anyone has the resource, could they have a look for his birth or baptism in the parish registers for William WEAR born either 1820 or 1821 in Workington or Whitehaven?
It'd be really good to know if he had any siblings too, chances are he'd have a brother called John, but that's just asking too much isn't it
If it's of any use, I think he was married in the 1st quarter of 1855 to either Mary ASHBRIDGE or Mary Ann CURWEN. (I'm favoring the latter) & he had at least two children, John b.abt 1857 & William b.abt 1660.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks.
Janine

William WEAR 20 Chimney Sweep, Prisoner
was in Whitehaven House of Correction in 1841 HO107/178-8/2
1851 has two of them
aged 29 born Workington, living Hensingham (wife Margaret + 2 kids) aged 29 born and lodging in Whitehaven
You need to be careful I think.

Very careful!!!
I'd found the chimey sweep, but he's not at the top of my list because everyone else in the family was a coal miner, as was William in the later censuses.
I'm hoping that if someone finds him in the parish registers I can narrow my field.
I think the Workington lad in Hensingham in 1851 is the most likely, but that's only an instinct with nothing to base it on.
There was also one in Durham. I won't rule out any of them just yet because I've learnt my lesson on that score in the past.
Thanks Geoff.

The IGI appears to have three at Workington around that time.
17 Jan 1819 of John and Mary 6 April 1822 of William and Eleabor 18 July 1822 of Anthony and Martha
You need the marriage certificate methinks.

Thanks Geoff,
That's another step closer. I have a friend who went to the records office today & he said he'd order the most likely marriage certificate for me. Fingers crossed.
Thank goodness the fathers of the three Williams don't have the same name!
