Coporshillingburnfoot
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 16:47 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone know the exact location of Coporshillingburnfoot.
I know it's in Ettrick somewhere in the Crosslee area.
My gt gt grandfathers family lived there for at least 40yrs
He drowned in the river Ettrick[aged 69] just below Scabcleuch in 1868.
Ihave looked at a few maps of the area and i found Scabcleuch
 but can't find Coporshillingburnfoot.
Ihave found it on census and on birth certs etc and it is always
 written as one word.
Is there a burn called Coporshilling? Can't find it on maps either.
  Any help?
  thanks bougie

I wonder if Cossarshill burn is the place you seek?

I could imagine that there might have been a contraction from Coporshilling to Cossarshill.  The 1881 census lists a residence at Cossarshillburnfoot.

  Hi Nell
I think you may be right about this as my gt gt Grandfather drowned
at Scabcleuch [which is right next to there] on 21st Dec 1868 , when the river Ettrick was in flood. No wonder i couldn't find the place. Looking at the map
it looks like the house may still be there. Can't wait to go out there for a look.
Many thanks you've solved many weeks of puzzlement. I never connected
the two names but it all falls into place now.
