Hello! I am hoping someone could help me find info on Margaret Thomson and her son John Forbes. My great great grandfather Alexander Thomson married Margaret George in Turriff on 9 Jan 1841. They had one son, John Forbes. Alexander emigrated to Bermuda before 1848. There are no records of Margaret or son John joining him. I presume that both died. I would be deeply grateful for any snippet of info that could be found, perhaps they are both buried in Turriff.
Many thanks!!!

Yes, this is likely the John Forbes that I am looking for. I should have added that he was born 14 Nov 1841. That would make him the correct age and it seems, therefore, that he was being raised by his grandfather, thus it does seem likely that Margaret Thomson passed away when John was a young boy or perhaps in childbirth. Hopefully, her record of death will turn up and I will search for help with the 1961 census.
MANY, MANY thanks for your help! lynmar

Hello there! MANY THANKS for your reply!
Here is what I know about Margaret Thomson.
Margaret's maiden name was George. She married my great great grandfather, Alexander Thomson, in Turriff on the 9 or 11th of Jan 1841. Margaret gave birth to John Forbes Thomson on 14 Nov 1841. My gg grandfather served in the army and left Scotland with his regiment in Jan 1843 to serve in Malta. In 1847, he was then posted to Bermuda, never returning to Scotland. It is quite possible that Margaret passed away before 1843 as I know that John Forbes Thomson was left to be raised by his maternal grandfather John George. John turns up in the 1851 census living with his grandfather not his mother Margaret. Since Alexander was in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, he would not have been able to raise a son. Alexander remarried in Bermuda in 1852, thus, I presume that Margaret died before Alexander left Scotland in 1843.
I am absolutely certain that Margaret would have been buried in Turriff. I am so grateful for any tidbit of information that you can find (possible date of death, grave location, etc.) Some day I would love to travel to Scotland to see this part of our heritage. I have no idea whatever ever happened to the son, John Forbes Thomson. He does not turn up anywhere in the 1861 census info that I have been able to access.
Since starting this project, I have been amazed at the kindness of the "genealogy angels" who are willing to offer help to complete strangers from around the world. Many, many thanks!!!
With kind regards from Canada lynmar

Hello again, Alison!
The mystery deepens! Perhaps, then, Margaret did live longer than I originally thought. Would you be able to forward to me any info for a Margaret Thomson buried in Turriff after 1865. If she did live past 1843, I wonder why her son was living with her father and where she was in fact living? I checked the list of poorhouses but the one Margaret Thomson that I did find in the 1881 census for St. Nicholas does not seem to be the correct one.
The names gillespie, rankine, paterson or panton do not turn up in any of the family history that I have. I am just wondering how they would be connected to Margaret Thomson. Is it possible that she remarried as well?
Thanks, lynmar

I will, thanks! This new info (the fact that she may not have been buried in Turriff at all) just makes it much more interesting!
