From Juce to Dewis
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 20:52 GMT (UK) »

I have a family line that I am following that in the Parish records of Bulkington the name was spelt Juce or Jues around the early 1800's by the 1830's the name was spelt Jewis (both in BMD and Parish records) and by the 1850's had become Dewis.

Could anyone please tell me the origin of this name.  I have a feeling that it could help me in my research.

Many thanks

Ancestry says that Jue may be a respelling of the English and Welsh surname Dew, which in turn has the following meanings -

English (of Norman origin): habitational name (Old French d’Eu) for someone from Eu in Seine-Maritime, France

Welsh: nickname for a fat person, from Welsh tew ‘fat’.

Many thanks for that.

Do you think that the name Dewis has Welsh origins?

It's very interesting how names evolve.

I used to work with a guy called John Dewis. He reckoned the surname originated in Cornwall. Maybe a Cornish language version of "Tew"
