I hadn't thought to do this before, but as there is another thread going and a lot of help being given, I thought I would try. Louise is having her dad take a look at this, but I thought I'd get other input until he has a chance to respond. Sorry Louise, I am very impatient.
I don't know much about this crest. The South African branch of the Collins family had some things in their possession, including rings and a silver dinner service, which was pawned. That branch is from Frederick Henry Collins, who was a master brewer and from what I hear, rather crazy. Different branches also include William Job Collins and Edward Treacher Collins (doctors) and going farther back, and in my direct line are architect/builder Job Collins and lawyer Francis Collins. So what do people think?

RootsChatting about dead ancestors ...

I dont know anything about heraldry, but the bird is a secretary bird, common on the plains of Africa; they have very long legs and catch and eat snakes. The star is the star of David, which might indicate Jewish connections ?
No idea about the rest !

All I can say is that it doesn't obey any of the rules of Heraldry and is a modern creation unlikely to have any historic significance. I would be surprised if it goes back more than fifty years.

This is all interesting. Africa makes sense since the branch that has it went to South Africa.

David,
I am very interested now to see what Louise's father will have to say about this. I will be patient. I knew nothing of this crest (or whatever it turns out to be) until about 6 months ago when I received it from a distant relative. It will be interesting to find out the approximate age, as according to the fellow who sent it to me, there had been quite a few pieces of silver with this crest on it and he believes them to have been pawned. Maybe this needs to go in the family rumor thread.
I think he believes it came from England with the master brewer, but considering what Lydart said about the bird, that would be highly unlikely.
Anyone else have an opinion?
