Does anyone know of a link between H.M.S. Firm and Suffolk?
I believe H.M.S. Firm was a Forester Class Composite Gunboat launched between 1874 and 1877 and sold off in 1907.
We are interested in Alfred Sparks, who was an Able Seaman on H.M.S. Firm when he married Eliza Ann Soans at the parish church in Kirkley on 15/11/1888. He was listed as being resident in Kirkley, but was born in London according to a later census. His father was also Alfred Sparks and was a watchmaker. We have not yet found either Alfred Sparks on a census, except the younger in 1901.
Any help appreciated,
James

If you don't have the service numer, there are alphabetical indexes to ADM188 which would help narrow the search - quite easy to use - then just look up the service numbers of each possible candidate - information provided on each actual record: name, date and place of birth, occupation on entering, ships served on (with dates), ranks achieved, date and reason for discharge.
1881 Census mayb in 1871 the only one I can find who may possibly fit is 4 listed as born Dalston Middlesex living Islington London Father Alfred but a House Decorator

We'll definitely try the records at Kew when we can get there.
Kris, we'd seen the 1881 census entry on the familysearch.org site before but weren't sure about it. It's hard to tell without other family members. The 1891 entry you've sent makes it more likely, being an Able Seaman as he was when he got married and being listed as being married. Unfortunately his birth falls in a bit of a gap in FreeBMD (search and images). There's one in Dec Q 1865 in Bermondsey reg district in the search, it's nearby but not the same as Wandsworth and a little bit early.
