Hi Meliora
Cuckfield is actually in West Sussex, and Ashburnham is in East Sussex near Battle. They are quite a distance apart. I pass through Ashburnham on my drive to work each day, not much there at all!
I have had a check for the baptism on www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk but nothing there for Ashburnham. There are a lot of Sussex records on that site however and worth remembering.

Thank you both.
I have exhaused every avenue with this one and it looks very much like the records have not even been transcribed, so not available via SFHS or ilk.
Looks like its another one for my list to check next time I can get to the ESRO
She married 1821 in Asburnham and then lived in Brede having 9 children between 1821 and 1838, before they all emigrated to New Zealand in 1841

If I go before you Adrian I could check for you, I'm going to have to go in the near future as I have a fair few to look up myself and as Lewes is only 14 miles away. Send me a PM and I'll print out the details and let you know when I plan to go.

Hi Adrian
Went to East Sussex Record Office today. Looked at Ashburnham, afraid I couldn't find Sarah Mitchell but I did find the following:
Ann Mitchell, baptised Ashburnham, 19 January 1806, daughter of Richard and Sarah.
Could this be her with a name change, bearing in mind her mother was Sarah.
Also found Hannah baptised Ashburnham, 7 August 1803, daughter of Richard and Sarah.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Just had a look at the Sussex Marriage Index and found the following:
Richard Mitchell and Sarah Upton married at Ashburnham on 13 May 1793, he is from Ninfield.
Hannah Mitchel and William Harmer married at Ashburnham 20 April 1822.
There is no Ann Mitchel marrying at Ashburnham until 1772.

Hmm now that's a bit of a problem because I just checked the SMI for Sarah amd Samuel's marriage and did you know that they married by Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence on 14 June 1821.
It has Sarah Mitchel and Samuel Furmenger spinster 25+ Ashburnham and bachelor 26+ Udimore which means she was born around 1796 not 1806. The only one I could find on familyhistoryonline checks out with the one born at Catsfield on IGI who married Soloman Creasey.
I thought I went through the Ashburnham records back to about 1790 looking for children of Richard and Sarah but I may have missed your Sarah.

Meliora,
From your previous reply I have the impression that you have access to the Catsfield PRs. If that is so, could I ask the favor of a look-up:
Elizabeth Ticehurst b 1804-05. 1851 census gives her birthplace as Catsfield.
thanks,
Jann

Thank you very much for your efforts.
I had not noticed the age difference from my records to the SMI. It does seem possible that Richard and Sarah could be her parents.
It gives me a good point to start from next time I am down there.
Again many thanks Adrian
