how to change a wife to a sister ????
« on: Monday 29 January 07 17:01 GMT (UK) »

I have a tree going back to about 1750, with a mother and father at the top of the tree (James and Abigail)
I have recently found out that James and Abigail are not the parents of my 'line'.  My ancestor was a base born child to Anne the sister of 'James'.

I tried to change the parentage to Anne, but she has now appeared on the tree as the second wife of James , and I cant change it !!!!

How do I do it without deleting the rest of the tree ?

What program or facility created your gedcom file ?

For example, I use Family Historian which would allow me to split the gedcom file at the errant branch and then merge this file into the correct relative once chosen.

Sorry to sound so vague in answer to your question, but my tree is recorded on
the Gene Reunited site, which does not  reveal which program created it.
I suppose , in hindsight, I should ask them  !!!

Unfortunately from what I know of the genesreunited site you have little option but to delete the whole branch and re enter the information.

Another possibility is to download one of the free genealogy programs and import your gedcom file into that and carry out the work on your home computer and then delete the whole file on genesreunited and replace it with your amended version

NO.  All is not lost.

Take Falkryns advice and download some free genealogy software e.g. PAF from : http://www.familysearch.org/
Export your current GEDCOM from genesreunited tree builder program.  They will send you an email with the GEDCOM attached.
Then import the GEDCOM file into your free genealogy program and perform the operation there.  Once you have sorted it out you can export a new 'fixed' GEDCOM file back to genesreunited.

Good luck

Thanks to the help, I'm now sorted out. My tree is now corrected.

I will certainly take the advice offered  and ensure I don't cock it up again.

Thanks again.

Good - I'm pleased it's sorted. I've done the same thing. I'm sure others here have too!
