Anyone help I am still looking for a john or Jonathon NICHOLS or NICHOLLS from Portsea, john is named on his son (John's) mariage certificate which was in 1839, his son John was born in 1816 according to gravestone, so I am working on his the first John to be married circa 1814/1816 ish in Portsea possibly to a Sarah ?

Hi there

On IGI there are 2 marriages round about the date you are looking at

John Nicols and Ann May 24 June 1813 St Mary's Portsea
John Nicols and Sarah Lane 28 April 1816 St Mary's Portsea

Also on IGI there are quite a few children of John and Sarah, but no son John born around 1816, the nearest is in 1821, and another son John in 1830, presumably the first John died so this might not be the right parents for your John

There is however a record of a John Nichols christening on 28 apr 1816 at St Mary's , son of John Nichols and Hannah (poss Ann? May) , no other children shown .

Thanks for that info, it seems to get more confusing as I get deeper into Nichols's, the other legs are reasonably hard work but this leg Aaaaarrrrrgh

Even the son John's gravestone is incorrect, but I accept that as gravestones are done at a later date and I doubt they could read

But I'll chase up that info, the one around 1816 sounds promising

There is also the marriage of John Nichols to Sarah Young 28 Feb 1814 in Alverstoke, which perhaps should not be ignored.

John and Hannah's son John would appear to be the only child of those parents baptised in Portsea.  But there again I can't see any other candidates in neighbouring parishes.  Nor do any burials seem to fit.

John son of John and Sarah baptised in 1816 appears to have been buried in 1818.

Hi again

My John the son was born circa 1816 died 1904, was a mariner as was his father john and was married in Workington 1839, this date I'am certain of, and that says "of age"

Why can't English certs be nice and easy like Scots Certs which have both parents of bride and groom on

oh hum why didn't I ask questions when my Grandmother on that side was alive

I do thank you as I have a few more names to try out, perhaps a trip to Hampshire (though an 800 + mile round trip is a bit off putting)

By the way do you know in the states it's Groundhog Day, should be re-named genealogists day

John may have said he was of full age in 1839, but he could just as easily have lied!  No-one checked.
