Hi,
Can I have a second request? Does the directory list any synagogues or Jewish organisations?
Many thanks,
Nanny Jan

Thanks so much for the info on J. WILLIS. The newspaper ad is great to have! He is a whitesmith and/or ironmonger on censuses, so I guess plumbing was closely related!

Hi, thanks for looking. They were C of E. At least they married at St Peter's, Regent's Square, St Pancras 19/11/1882, a C of E parish (address given for both was Cromer St, her parents' address and far south of Highgate / Hampstead) and both sets of parents likewise C of E.
In 1891 the ecclesiastical parish of their Spencer Rd address was Holy Trinity, in 1901 it was St John's (Gresbach Rd, Upper Holloway - so probably outside the directory's area, too late anyway). Henrietta, the mother died (March qtr 1891, before the census when the daughter Henrietta is living with her maternal grandmother Charlotte Keatley) and Albert remarried shortly after.
I'll make it down to the LMA sometime in February and go through the likely parishes. My tree has '000s of people on. This little lot are first cousins of one of my ancestral lines, so a little too remote to justify a cert.
Any help with neighbouring parishes grately appreciated. Was there a Morley, Albert in the directory you could search on by name?
Thanks, Richard.

I was just wondering, with regards to James WILLIS, did the Directory make any distinction between the nature of his two addresses? Was one strictly residential and the other strictly business? Or perhaps he had moved, and they had not deleted the earlier one. Ta.

Hi there,
I think you'll find that Gayton Road was residential and High Street was business. He was in "private persons" at Gayton, and High Street in "tradesmen".
There's only one shop in Gayton Road, right at the beginning (which happens to be my favourite charity shop!). The rest are smallish, but no doubt hideously expensive, residential properties.
I'll try to remember to have a look at the High Street address next time I'm up in Hampstead.

Then this may make him the first of my rellies to graduate to having both a business address and a home address! Most of them seemed to have lived at work or worked at home, depending on your interpretation! Thanks for the clarification. I wondered about the High St. address too. My internet research shows that 83-84 High St. is a restaurant, but it looks like it's a new building, although with the same numbering system: http://www.zenw3.com/Contact%20Us.htm However, the restaurant reviews have been negative, so it may not be there long! - http://www.myhampstead.co.uk/hampstead/restaurants-reviews-zenw3.htm
I suppose that since they lived at #1 Gayton, it was likely on a corner, and could even now be your charity shop, depending on which corner it was. Would love a photo, if anyone reading this is ever in the area!
Ta.

Hi there,
I'm really surprised to know that 83-84 is ZenW3. For some reason, I had assumed it was further up the High Street. ZenW3 is just about opposite the end of Gayton Road, so it wasn't far from home to work for your man!
ZenW3 is a newish building. Hampstead suffered quite a lot of bombing in WW11, so there are some very jarring gaps in the beautiful old architecture. ZenW3 has been there for quite a few years now. Never been there myself, but I know people who rave about it.
Anyway, I'm always up and down from Hampstead, so I'll try to remember to look and take some photos for you. The first properties in Gayton Road (coming from the High Street) are the Oxfam shop on the right, and Vine Cottage on the left (which has suffered rather a sad fate) but I'll check that out and let you know.

Thanks for additional bits - fascinating! If you are able to investigate Gayton Rd a bit more when you are in Hampstead some time, that would be wonderful!
