Marriage help - John Bigland
« on: Sunday 21 May 06 18:06 UTC (UK) »

I've found a marriage that is connected to my family but I can't get a spouse to check if it is the correct one.

The information I've got is

John Bigland
1866
Jul-Aug-Sep
Kendal
Lancashire, Westmorland

10b 85[46]a

It's handwritten on the image of the record and I can't find a match for it.  can anyone help me find his partner.

I think it's Eleanor Laycock.

Searching 1861 for an Eleanor b. ca. 1847 Langdale, there is either Eleanor Laycock or Eleanor Hall. Checking BMD, Eleanor Laycock marries in Sep 1866 at Kendall, and just like John, her name is added handwritten on the page. She's indexed page 806a but I think it says 856a, just like John.

i think that's correct because on the 1871 census he's married to an eleanor.

Thanks for that.

Hi Treenie

I believe John Bigland's father was my GG Grandfather William Bate's half brother At the time of the 1881 census John Bigland was living at Millerground near Windermere he was born in about 1843 his wife was eleanor aged 34 born at Langdale and her grandfather was probably Robert Wilson a retired farmer aged 78 that lived next door at Millerground the above had children Robert wilson Bigland 12 ,joseph 10
john8, margaret5, helena 3 and earnest 1 . Robert Wilson was born  at Lindale in Cartmel
In 1851 John Bigland 9 was living at Low Borrans, Applethwaite. His father was also called John 41 he was a cattle dealer and his wife Mary 37 was born in Liverpool he had siblings Henry 11, Elizabeth5 ,Christopher5 and Mary2 months. His father was farming at Low Longmire , Applethwaite in 1881
The census reference for John and Eleanor in the 1881 census is RG11  5206/66   1
Possible marriage for John Bigland snr and a Mary Tyson at Windermere 28th oct 1839 . marriage reference Kendal dec 1839 vol 25  page 521
Hope that helps

cheers David

Hi David,

Treenie hasn't been online for a while but maybe your post will make her come back now  Smiley

Just out of curiosity - wasn't Eleanor the daughter of Joseph Laycock and Margaret, as shown in 1851 at HO107/2441 22 6 then? There's a 14 year old stepson Wilson in the household, so maybe Wilson was Margaret's maiden name?
