I have John Fothergill born 1791 Mallerstang, Westmorland..... married Ann Hudson nee Park in 1836 ...... in 1841 was farming at Esthwaite Hall, Hawkshead, Lancashire.
I am trying to find who his parents were.........which Fothergill family he came from ..........and if he had a previous marriage.
I have looked various places....Westmorland Papers.....IGI ....there's plenty of John Fothergills but most appear to be born in nearby Ravonstonedale. There is a couple on IGI.....one born just below 1791 and the other just above.
Does anyone please have Mallerstang Fothergills in their tree?
Thank you for any help.
Jean
Sorry I just noticed my other thread,,,,,,,should have just modified it.......never mind.

Hello again Gillian, nice to hear from you.
Yes John was alive in 1851 he said he was born in Mallerstang....he died March 1861 just before the census (found dead on the highway).
'Helen Smith Too' was kind enough to fine a newspaper report but the full coroners report didn't survive. From the newspaper, he appeared to be drunk and fell off his horse and cart, the horse trampled over him ....... lol ....... some things don't change!!!!
I also have been in touch with Cumbria Archive and they sent me a report on his marriage. He was living in Greystoke at the time .. the same as Ann Hudson ..... they were married by licence in Greystoke and he had been married before.
The witnesses were Ann's family and fathers are not on in 1836.
I have just sent £9. 50 off to Lancashire Record Office for a copy of his seven year lease to Myles Sandy on Esthwaite Hall, Lancs. where he farmed... Not that that will tell me very much, but you never know.
There is a John Fothergill married Ann Brownrigg in 1829 I think it is, in Greystoke . It may be him as there's no more Fothergills in Greystoke, I've been trying to find a death for her and see if there was any family.
I'm no nearer finding who his parents were, he may have got his age slighly wrong as there is a couple more Johns born in Mallerstang one a bit older and one a bit younger....... which is a nuisance.
Anyway any help is great and thanks for listening
Jean

Gillian, I have only just found out for sure, that he was married before....I've been looking and a John Fothergill married Ann Brownrigg in Greystoke.....I think it was 1829.........I can't find a death for her........ I think it must be him but I'm not sure......... I thought he was just there to marry Ann Hudson who lived in greystoke but maybe not, his family might have moved there early on.

Hi This may not be relevant but I think these people might be from the same family as your John: marriage licences: 1 May 1757 John Cleasby, bach, yeom, 23, of Mallerstang, KS Mary Fothergill, spr, 22 of Wharton Dykes, KS bondsman: Robert Atkinson yeoman of KS
2 Feb 1761 John Tunstall, yeom of Mallerstang Elizabeth Fothergill of Wharton bondsman: John Winn, yeoman of Mallerstang
They might be aunts to your John regards Deborah Boss

Thanks for that Deborah, where did you get it from?
Is Wharton Dykes near Mallerstang? .... I suppose it must be if the grooms and witnesses came from Mallerstang
There is a few Fothergills in Mallerstang on LDS, I've been trying to find a previous family, now I know for certain he was married before Ann Hudson.
I'll have a look at the Tunstall and Cleasby families ... you never know somthing might crop up.
thankyou again Jean

Jean The references are from the Diocese of Carlisle marriage licence/bond index. I offered it as a lookup resource some time ago.
If you type Wharton Dykes into a2a it brings up several hits including:
1752 "Recognizance Michael Fothergill of Mallerstang yeoman, Thomas Ward of Mallerstang yeoman and Richard Cunningham of Nateby yeoman, for appearance of Michael and good behaviour towards James Dent and all other the inhabitants of Wharton Dykes."
There's also a reference to William Fothergill of Mallerstang in 1757.
Plus other references to Cleasby family.

Oh yes Deborah, that's where I found John Fothergill's lease from Myles Sandy for Esthwaite Hall. I've only ever put names of people in the search.... didn't think to put place names in......... silly me.......I'll have a go see what I can come up with....thanks for the marriages.
I have a feeling John Fothergill's father was Willam, but just not sure yet.

Hi fredrirca..... I've only just arrived home from four days around Hawkshead where John was living and died.... found everything I wanted. ... On the way back home I came Sedbergh, Outhgill, Kirby Stephen way ... to see if I could find anything, but it was pouring down, so I'll go back anther day.
I do know that most of the Fothergills seem to come from Ravenstonedale area but there is a heck of a lot of John's born around the same time (1791/93. He was only on the 1841 and 1851 census.... and in 1851 he said he was born Mallerstang and he was born 1791...... I have a choice of three John's...... how on earth do I find the right one? He was married twice.... both times in Greystoke, Cumberland ..so that doesn't help because I've been on to Cumberland Records and the last marriage in 1836 doesn't name his father. I'm lost as to how I can find out. According to his death cert., he was born 1793
Thanks for replying and if you can come up with anything else I'd be grateful...as I can't think what to do except guess. I'm starting to think he was maybe baptised John Dent Fothergill.... as his first daughter was called Frances and his first son was called James which maybe after his mother and father Frances Dent and James Fothergill ....... but the Dent was never used in his name. There is a fothergill gathering every year I think I'll have to go next time around. Jean

In 1881 I've traced 3 of Frances brothers John married to Jane 37 born at Ambleside and son John G 7 born at Grasmere they lived at Lake View ,Grasmere where he farmed 9 acres I understand this is now the site of the the large hotel overlooking Grasmere Lake. Thomas was married to Theresa born at Cookshill in Staffordshire they had a daughter Ada E , Thomas was a coachman and lived at Foldgate cottage near Hawkshead in 1881 but had moved to Park Hall in Derbyshire in 1891 they had more children.

His presumed brother Thomas Dent Fothergill was christened at Mallerstang on 11th Jan 1808 same parents named as above and birthplace on the 1881 census given as Castlethwaite ,Mallerstang .In 1881 he was living at Malham in Yorkshire aged 73 unmarried a labourer and Head of a household.

Hi Fellsman,
Nice to hear from a distant relative, if you haven't already got this information...Frances was baptised 15th July 1838 at Greystoke, Cumberland, her father John was an innkeeper living at Springfield, Greystoke. (from Carlisle record Office) ..... Ann Hudson's brother's wife Ann, was called Atkinson.
John Fothergill was killed on the highway between Sawrey and Eelhouse on 15th March 1861, I have a copy of a newspaper report on the inquest.
Frances's husband william Bates was from Hongle when they married. Do you know if Frances was ill ..as the children seemed be with their grandparents quite alot?
Brother John's wife was Jane Green Yes Robert's wife was Ann Armstrong. Thomas's wife was Theresa Slinn. William married Agnes Gibson and moved over to Co Durham.
I have quite a lot of information but it's great to get more as I've never been 100% sure that John Dent is 'my' John. It makes you wonder why John and Thomas had 'Dent' added to their names and never used the name.
Please ask and if I have the information I'lI give you any you might not have and I'd love to find concrete proof that the child baptised 'John Dent' was indeed John fothergill of Esthwaite Hall. ( I have a copy of the lease) Jean
