Can I get my index page back?
« on: Wednesday 31 January 07 12:21 GMT (UK) »

Help!

I am trying very hard to put up a website.  Working carefully through all kinds of tutorials and so on.  The web page reserved for me said that when I was ready to upload my site I should delete the index file.  So I did.  Now when I type in my web address it just says page not found.

Can I get my index page back?  Have I lost my site? What did I do wrong?  Undecided

Shouting at my PC didn't seem to help at all.  Wink

Strange that - it doesn't help me either Wink

The first thing is not to panic - easier said than done at the start I know - you must read all my questions on here when I started out!!  Embarrassed

Have you uploaded your own index file as replacement?
I think that is the next step.

Hope Berlin Bob is around - he would know what to do!!

Try that and see - I still do things "parrot fashion" - but with lots of help get there in the end!

Cheers

Strange it works for me .... nothing gets done but I generally feel a lot better.

As has been said you will need to create your own index.htm (or index.html) file and this gets placed in the area you deleted the holding page (the index page you referred to).

The new index page should be the main welcome page or front page of your new web site containing such information as you need to or want to display to viewers with links to further pages in your site.

The process of moving (and deleting) the pages to and from your website is part of what is referred to as FTP or File transfer protocol. The system which allowed you to delete the original index file should be a two way process and should also allow you to upload your replacement file. Failing that there are several good free FTP programs available.

Message no 6 in this thread explains the whole process

Thanks for your replies.  I have been using Berlin Bob's tutorial and i'm using Rootschat's FTP program.

I have been using Publisher to build my website (actually don't like publisher because it seems to be so 'independent' of everything else, and maybe that's the problem) but it's quick and I was keen to get something on my web space while I work on a better one.  I thought it would be simple to upload.

Anyway the next problem is that I don't seem to have a page named 'index' in my website files.  I have converted to html but can't find anything that looks like index.

Huh

Hi Susan

I used Publisher to put up a holding page when I first got my webspace - B-Bob hated it because Microsoft html is not very efficient code.

Anyway, you should have a file called index or home.html/htm somewhere on your computer. Can you remember what you called the saved file?

Gadget

Just checked my old folders. You should have a file generated by Publisher called index.html and a folder called index_files. both the file and the contents should be uploaded with an FTP, as Falkyrn says, to your webspace.

Thanks Gadget.  I must have done something wrong though because I have looked everywhere and there isn't a file called index, or anything like it.

However, giving up on publisher - which I don't like anway, did I mention that!  Wink ? I have created the start of a web site in Frontpage and it did have an index file and I have now uploaded it.  So now at least when I type in the web address it goes somewhere!  Cheesy yippee

Long way to go yet.  But thanks to you all I persevered and at least feel as though I'm back on track.

Thank you  Smiley

Susan

Glad you're sorted now (most of us have been there!).

When your site is up and running, don't forget to add the details to your profile, and PM Biker to get the site added to the "list" at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,23896.0.html

Good luck
