Hugh Wallis has put together a great site based on the Middle names (normally associated as surnames) listed in the IGI.  I have found connections on the female side which have kept the surname alive in this way.

Behind the Name An interesting site looking at first names. You may be trying to find out from which country the name originated from then this is the place to try.
