Alice SLATTER - Steventon
« on: Friday 02 February 07 13:20 GMT (UK) »

My wife and I have just started researching our family tree.

Her grandmother was Alice Slatter born June 1889 in Steventon who married Moses John Prior July 1921 in Basingstoke.

We cannot find any information on Alice Slatter's ancestors.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Chardine

Welcome to Rootschat!

The best thing to start is to interview any living relatives that might recall names, places etc to help you.  Does anyone have the family papers?

A marriage cert for the couple would give you Alice's father's name and occupation.  You can order it from the GRO once you have a reference, which can be searched for free at www.ancestry.co.uk (use the Complete records, not freebmd)

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Jesse was widowed in 1881:

This looks like his marriage to Sarah:
Dec 1885 Abingdon 2c 643
Jesse Slatter - Sarah Slade

Hi - all

From the registers for Steventon - Jesse second marriage

Nov 15th 1885 - Jesse Slatter of full age widower labr. of Steventon son of James Slatter labr.    to     Sarah Slade aged 22 spinster of Steventon daughter of Francis Slade (decd.) lab - by banns witnessed by Thomas Slade and Jemima Tarry.

There are all sorts of other Slatter entries in these registers which you may find useful/interesting - unfortunatly I have to go out now for a couple of hours so i will come back later to see what is needed   Smiley

Many thanks for the feeback so far.

We are somewhat confused as there appears to be several Jesse Slatters who could be her farther.

Alice had two sisters Amy born 1893 and Gladys born early 1900's.

One candidate could be Jesse Slatter born 1873 in Abingdon.

Further confusion is that Jesse Slatter born 1846 had a first marriage (wife unknown) and had two children. Son Jesse born 1870 (no further details) and Harriet 1874 (no further details).

Jesse Slatter born 1846 married a second time to Sarah Slade.

We cannot find any evidence of Alice, Amy and Gladys from any of the above.

Any comment welcome.

From the baptism registers for Steventon

Jesse & Sarah had the following children baptised

1888 Francis James
1893 Amy
1899 Alice
1902 Gladys

It appears that Jesse first wife was also called Sarah - though they didn't marry at Steventon - they had baptised
1874 Harrietta (sic)
1875 Ellen
1877 Sarah

there are burials in 1877 for a Sarah Slatter aged 27 and 1879 for a Sarah Slatter aged 2 years 2 months
