House of Industry, Whitchurch
« on: Friday 02 February 07 22:42 GMT (UK) »

I think at long last I may of found my
2nd Gt Grandmother Sarah Allen age 10
on the 1841 census (HO107/903/13 Folio 18 pg 2)
living at the House of Industry, Whitchurch, Shropshire.
There is also a George Allen age 55 living at the same, possibly Sarah's Father.

Can anyone please tell me any info on this place &
if any records are available?

Many thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

I had a relative in the House of Industry in Oswestry. I contacted the Shropshire Archives who were very helpful. Unfortunately the records pre 1911 hadn't survived. i hope you might get further. This is the link:

You will find Whichurch in there, If nothing else take a bit of time to go round the site, it makes for some fasinating reading,

Hi Sue,

I will have a check - but am almost sure it is now the local hospital - there should be some details on it at the local library - will ask tomorrow.

Cheers

hello

the House of Industry was built in 1794 it later  became Deermoss Hospital,in 1990 this combined with the nearby cottage hospital to become the community hospital.

the poor law union records are kept at the Shropshire Research and Records Centre in Shrewsbury.

in 2004 Logaston Press published "Whitchurch Hospitals..." by John Clayton. ISBN 1 904396 26 7.

There is a full chapter on the house of industry with some pictures.

The book only costs five pounds and all profits go to the Friends of Whitchurch Community Hospital so please try and buy a copy if you think that it may be of interest.

hope this is of some use

from Bagshaw's directory 1851

"The House of Industry, situate on Deer Moss, was established in 1794,and is under the management of twelve directors or guardians who nominate a chairman. They costitute a board for the regulationof the house and the paupers belonging to the fourteen townships of the parish of Whitchurch, which are embraced in the jurisdiction of the board. The house will accomodate 150 inmates;the present number on the books is 63."

I hope that this is of some interest.

p.s. I asked previously about Waterstones, they sell it in the Shrewsbury branch so any branch should be able to obtain a copy for you at no extra charge.

You can buy direct from Logaston press. They are in Almeley in herefordshire and their website is info@logastonpress.co.uk or telephone on 01544 327344.

They are a small local publisher who distribute to small independent bookshops in the main and produce some excellent books on Shropshire. They will also be able to tell you where in your area their books are stocked or which booksellers will post them out to you.
