As far as I know, there are no available records for the 1831 census.

The following is from www.familyrecords.gov.uk/topics/census_print.htm

From 1801 to 1831 the censuses were simply head counts with no personal information on individuals recorded (except in exceptional cases). From 1841 personal information on individuals was recorded.

Thanks Debbie,   I am researching Thomas McInnes (gggrandfather) and I located him in British Armed Forces in India 1847 and I have him in an army muster roll book in 1845, I know from his marriage certificate his father was William,  I have no birthdate or birthplace.  As he was enlisted in KO,S.B. I am trying Scotland.  I have been working on this for a long time.   I appreciate your help. thankyou. Joyce  (Alberta.Canada)

Kings Own SB - Scottish Borderer regiment?

You have a toughie there, McInnis is a popular name throughout Scotland, although admittedly, more common in the Highland areas.
Have you managed to track Thomas in the 1851 - 1901 census?  Depending on when and where he died, the death cert. would hold some info for you.

If he joined a Borders regiment, that may indicate that he came from the South though?

Good luck!

Thanks Debbie, I have recently located a record of his death in Macao, China 1856,I have requested a copy of his death cert' just in case it holds any further information. His wife died in Madrid in 1855.  At this time there where two young children left orphans. Two girls,   one of whom became our gggrandmother, little is known. Four boys died the same year early 1850.    Once again thanks for the help and the interest,  makes me keep on searching.....Joyce.
P.S something in your e-mail made me think . should I be able to find him with family on a census for 1851 somewhere, up to now I am only locating them on army records?

Hi Joyce,

Let us know what the death certificate says when you get it.  Fingers crossed for you that it holds more information.  I think you are on the right track with the army records.  You need to find out the exact troop movements for his regiment from the time he was married  - through the 1851 census period - right to his death.
There is every chance that his wife and family were tagging along, as they did in those days - and that the births and christenings, and even burials for his children were recorded locally.
I have come across births and burials for one of my Derrick lines this way, when the husband was serving in Malta in the early 1800's.

Good luck, and keep on plugging away at it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence,  Deb.   Sometimes it seems so hopeless and then I get a little glimmer.  I know that he was still in U.K in 1844(Army Muster Roll) then in 1845 I have him getting married in Madrid.  So that is what I'll try for now , when the rgt; was posted overseas.   Thanks so much for your interest.Joyce.
