The more I look the worse it gets!
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 14:58 GMT (UK) »

Had what seemed to be a nice branch on family tree and thought I'd try to find a marriage...from there it's gotten worse by the minute. Am now so confused that I don't know what information is correct, what might tie in to the family, and what's totally wrong.

To start with:
Dr. Thomas Charles Hunter, (c1836 Ireland-4 Mar.1910 Gosforth Villas) married Isabella. Children: Mary R.S. (c1873), Isabella Elizabeth "Bessie" (c1875), Jane/Jennie Josephine Hunter (c1878), Catherine Maud (c1879), Jessie M. (c1883), Johnston Brown (c1885), William Godfrey (c1891).

1881 Census-5 Gosforth Villas, Coxlodge, Northumberland (Charles, wife Isabella 35 born Tweedmouth, Durham, children Mary, Isabella E., Jane, Catherine.
In 1881 there is also a servant: Isabella Storey, unm., 16, born Tweedmouth.

1901 Census- Cox Lodge (Gosforth?): Thomas Hunter, wife Isabella, children Isabella, Johnston, William.

A relative had someone in England research the family and was told that Thomas Charles Hunter married Isabella Storey (same name as servant). As servant and Charles' wife are both listed as born in Tweedmouth I thought they might have been related.

Couldn't find a marriage for Thomas Charles Hunter & Isabella Storey but found one for a Thomas Charles Hunter (Sept.1865 quarter Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland) to Isabella Shannon.
Found a birth (March 1846 quarter Berwick on T?) for an Isabella Shannon. Would Tweedmouth be in this district?
If Thomas & Isabella married in 1865 were other children born between 1865-1873?

Also found marriage for a Thomas Charles Hunter (March 1907 quarter Castle Ward) to either Margaret Coulson or Ada Ellen Welch.
Thought this might have been a 2nd marriage for our Thomas C. Hunter but according to  researcher, Isabella Hunter died 4 June 1923 at 46 High St., Gosforth). Could Isabella Hunter (d.1923) be daughter? If anyone has access to death indexes could they look up Isabella Hunter and see what age she was?

Then, found birth: Isabella Story Hunter (Dec.1870 quarter Cockermouth dist.).

Family must have attended Gosforth Parish Church. Daughter Jane married there 1903 and Mary (d.1895) and Catherine (d.1895) buried there. Does anyone have access to church records as baptisms might give mother's maiden name or other details?

Sorry this post is so long but the more I try to sort it out the more confusing the whole thing gets! Would greatly appreciate any help on this.

HI there,

Have just looked at the death indexes for you and found that an Isabella Hunter (no middle intial) died in Castle W? In June 1/4 of 1923 age 72.

I wondered if they left it late to register that it might have crept into the next quarter and sure enough there's another on again with no middle initial, who died age 22 this time in Rothbury.

I have no idea where each district is,but they are both volume 10,so that suggests it is 'up north somewhere.

Have no more suggestions at the moment though, will read your post again and maybe come back later.

All the best

I have found the family in 1871- do you have that?

It shows them with niece Isabella STOREY age 6.

Would you like the info?

At 5 Gosforth Villas,Cox Lodge,Northumberland in 1871

Thomas Charles Hunter head mar 35 Doctor of Medicine b Ireland.
Isabella Hunter wife mar 24 b Tweedmouth
Isabella Storey niece unm 6 b    "         "
Elizabeth Beadling servant unm 18 b Camperdown Northumberland

Doesn't necessarily mean that his wife's maiden name was Storey.
Could have been someone HER sister married.

More investigations required.

Carol- Your're brilliant!
Think the 1923 Isabella Hunter age 72 is Thomas Charles wife (although she was probably about 5 years older). If that's the case, then the 1907 marriage is probably not our Thomas Charles Hunter.
1871 census is interesting as it gives Isabella Storey as niece. She is certainly not related on the Hunter side. It must be her in 1881 as a servant with the family.
Have been trying, for years, to find a descendant without any luck.

Not very helpful but do you realise you can search all the BMD indexes free on ancestry.co.uk?   Choose the full version.  I am amazed at the number of births that come up on FreeBMD and that was only on the one spelling of Storey.  Trying Story, Storrie etc brings up even more.
I should have a good look for the marriage and hope it happened in England, not Ireland!  Of course, getting a birth certificate for a child will confirm the mother's maiden name.

You beat me to it!  It took me some time to decide that the births would be registered in Castle Ward.  I looked up William as his age is 4 months in 1891 and he is Oct/Nov 1890 Castle Ward 10b 298? Number not very clear.  I then looked for all Hunter births in Castle Ward on FreeBMD and several of them come up so you should have a choice for certificates.

Thank you everyone- had tried to look at indexes on ancestry before but each time subscription screen came up. Tried again on my daughter's account and it worked.
Have to do more searching there but did find a marriage I'd been looking for quite a while. Had: Jessie M. Hunter married (after 1901) Scott Headley. Found: Jessie Muriel Hunter m.1909 William Scott Hedley.
