Advice on land research please- early New Zealand.
« on: Monday 16 October 06 03:24 BST (UK) »

Hello
Is it possible to find out anything about land purchase in the early days. My gggrandfather, John Eden Brown,  possibly bought land in Whitianga/Mercury Bay in the 1860s or 1870s.
Land Information New Zealand advised me to employ a land or titles research agent to research this.
Has anyone gone down this path or researched in this area themselves? Is it a long and tedious process?
Are these early records still around?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Charlie Bucket.

Hey Charlie Bucket,

I dont know how much this will assist you, in your origional query, But I thought I would see if I could chase your man around the Elec Rolls.

I also checked the marriages to see if I could par up his wife in Elec Rolls,  but he married later.

Although you probably have this information, Interesting- he looks to have married two women with the same surname, although the first names are very similar.

I wonder it is worthwhile contacting Whitianga's genealogical society or historical society, you never know they may have information on your man, in local files, that could provide further information to where his land is. Try everything before having to pay our lots of money I say.

If you have any other family whose names I can check in the Elec Rolls let me know, we might strike it lucky next time and get a full address.

There is also a probate for John Eden Brown 1914, Puriri, storkeeper located at Nz Archives.

Cheers

Thanks DelBoy
I should have mentioned that:
1) John Eden Brown had a son and grandson with the same name.
2) John Eden Brown is the sort of elusive ancestor that you would only wish on a masochistic genealogist. Trying to find out about him is like trying to grab hold of an eel-I think I'm getting information on him but it slips away.
The 1895 marriage is that of his son  but the next one is a bit of a puzzle. Thanks for all that research, DelBoy. Following your suggestion, I will contact the genealogy society.
Back to the original John Eden Brown. His land was probably next to Mother Brown's Creek in Mercury Bay. Mother Brown was his wife and I know that they lived by that creek. Actually I know a little about him but not much.
My main question is whether this early land information exists and how to go about finding it.

Charlie Bucket.
