NEWTON of Fishtoft/Boston
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 12:28 GMT (UK) »

Edward Faunt (Faut) NEWTON was baptized 2 Nov 1809 at Church of England, Parish Church of Fishtoft, Lincolnshire.  This record was found at the LDS website and only mentions his mother, Elizabeth NEWTON.  On 27 Jun 1829 Edward married Rebecca Saul GIBSON at Boston, Lincolnshire.  I am trying to find the name of Edward NEWTON'S father.
Any help with these surnames would be greatly appreciated as I have hit that brick wall with this one.
Thanks so much,
Jane

A baptism which doesn't name the father almost certainly indicates illegitimacy.  A marriage before 1837 would not be expected to show any father's name in any case.

I'm afraid your brick wall may take a great deal of knocking down Sad

Of course the father could have been a FANT/FAUNT who was around at the time - a John FANT married at Fishtoft in 1813.  I see Edward's first son was named John Edward NEWTON, which is suggestive, but not proof. Smiley

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your quick response!
Edward being illegitimate has been my theory since I first found his baptism record a few years ago.  I had always thought the first son, John Edward, may have been named after Rebecca's father, John GIBSON.  However, your suggestion is food for thought also and I will definitely keep it in mind in my quest to break down this brick wall.
I am hoping the Parish record of the marriage of Edward to Rebecca gives Edward's fathers name.
Thanks again,
Jane
