Census look up please 1851 and 1861
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 17:19 GMT (UK) »

I apologise now if I am in the wrong area.

I am looking for someone with access to the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

I am looking for a John Morren who was born c 1801 and was married to Helen Leslie.  They had at least four girls and four boys between 1833 and 1854. According to the IGI some were born at Auchindoir and Kearn.  Their names were Rachel, George, Sarah, William, John, Helen, Hugh and Jane.

I have been told that they lived at Barflat early on and Mortlach Dufftown later in life.

Any help with this would be great.

Cheers

That is brilliant. Much more than I expected.

I take it Barflet was an area of Auchindoir back in the 1800s.

Can I ask you to see if you can find John Morren's father in the 1841 census.   His name was William but the spelling of Morren may be Murrion or Murian.  He was born c 1761 and died on 5th July 1844.  It is thought that he lived at Barfelt.  His wife Mary died in 1836.

I am not sure where the Jane you found in the 1861 census fits in yet but thank you for that.

Thanks again

Cheers
Betty.

sarah...age 35

1851 census; barflat

sarah...head...age 54...stocking maker...born auchindoir

1861 census; barflat, (john's daughter sarah is here with aunt)

sarah...age 65...farmer's daughter...born auchindoir
sarah...niece...age 22...farmer's daughter...born auchindoir

now i have a problem......hoping that gadget or monica could lend a hand here...

the william that was on the 1841 census (son of john) looks like he is in hospital in 1851 (address; robert gordon hospital..william, aged 10) but the jane in the census of 1861 was jane watt married to william morren???

now in the 1861 census it states that she is the wife of a ploughman, well....

1861 census; new noth, rhynie, aberdeenshire

william...age 31...ploughman...born auchindoir

how can this be? is he a cousin of your john?

So far I have not picked up on another William apart from John having a brother William who died in infancy.  He was born in 1797.

I have William's son being baptised c1839 which would make the age of 10 correct in 1851.  He married Margaret Adams in 1870 and had two children George and Margaret.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Betty and Joe

Not sure how William who married Jane Watt may be connected. Certainly the names of their children bear some similarities to the other Morren families. His parents were John Morren (and all its variants  Wink) and Christina Smith, both showing alive in the 1851 Census:

John Morren    66, Crofter Of 2 1/2 Acres, b. Auchindoir
Christian Morren 54,  b. Auchindoir
John Thomson    5, grandson,  b. Auchindoir

Address: Cairndaird, Auchindoir

William's birth details not showing on IGI, but one brother's does:

ROBERT MORAIN  Birth: 12 MAY 1831/ Christening: 21 MAY 1831 Auchindoir And Kearn, Aberdeen, Scotland

John showing above is a peer to John, husband to Helen, so maybe the connections are a generation back. Pure guessing here  Tongue, maybe the two John's were cousins.

Regards.

Monica

Can I go back to the 1841 census you found for John's father and his sister, are they both recorded as Morren (spelling).

This is in reply to Monica.  At the moment I only have William having a sister Mary, christened 3rd January 1762 but there may be more brothers and sisters. So far I do not have any Roberts.

The only other John is John's son born 1842.  He married Charlotte Pittendreigh c1871. and had four sons, one named John.

The John born 1801 who married Helen had three sisters, Rachel, Mary and Sarah and brothers George and William.  The two boys were dead before the 1841 census.  Rachel married a Thomas Mitchell c1821.  Sarah you have found but I have not followed Mary yet who was born in 1792.

I hope all this makes sense, as I get easily confused.

Thanks both for all your help.

Cheers
Betty

I take it Barflet was an area of Auchindoir back in the 1800s.

Bareflat is a farm about a mile south of Rhynie. You can find it on www.streetmap.co.uk.
