The Bowshers of Somerset
« on: Wednesday 07 February 07 08:01 GMT (UK) »

Charles Bowsher ( transcribed as Charles Banther ) in the 1861 Welsh Census RG9 4023 p 18 (Newport ) aged 75  puts his place of birth as Somerset   M?Huh?. In 1851 he is is Bristol and puts his place of birth as Bristol and in 1841 he also in Bristol but described as not born in County. His wife Ann (born in county) dies before 1851 and all of his children are born in Bristol  (except  possibly the one in 1861 which is dittoed from his place of birth). His date of birth also varies substantially; In 1841 he is 44 and in 1851 he is 50. Can anyone please  identify his place of birth and let me know where I can follow his records back.

Hi Saxon - not at all clear is it?

Here are the Somerset parishes

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/parishes.html#M

It does rather look as though it ought to be one of the Bristol parishes south of the river in Somerset, going by the other refs to Bristol, but I don't know of one that matches.

Failing that, could it be MEARE?  Near Glastonbury, so rather further south and west.

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink
