Thank you for any help
|
During my research into my family tree, I'm told the above George Groom, born 1879 Wellington, Shropshire. Son of John Groom 1850 and his wife Hannah Yapp 1845, was a soldier in the Boar War and was killed on the last day of the war[or was it the last day of the 1914/18 war] Can anyone please shew any light on the subject. Help would be gratefully appreciated . Many thanks Eric. P.S. According to Census's1871/81 his parents were tailers living at the time of his birth at 29 Blacker St.,Birmingham or 123 Walsall Road, Falling Heath, Wednesbury.

Many thanks for your prompt reply, I think I may have asked about the wrong George Groom. It could possibly be George Groom 1857 born Arleston, Wellington, parents Francis Groom, born 1805, Wellington, mother Margaret Groom born 1816 , Ludlow, I hope we can get some joy on this one, once more very many thanks,Eric.

me again
I cant find anything conclusive; There are many where just a name is listed so, without the regiment ?? If he was born 1857 it is not likely it was WW1 so, in the records for :
GRO Natal & S. African Forces Deaths 1899-1902, there is a :
George Groom 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry on page 744
which seems a very likely candidate. I only have access to the index so you would have to pursue this yourself - maybe another posting on the "Military" Board will yeald the record proper Best of luck

Many thanks , it seems a good possibility this could be the person we are looking for. His nephew, another George Groom served in the BOAR War signing on on June 7th. 1898 and was discharged after serving his twelve years in the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry. I'm extremly new to this research business where can I review this info? Regards, Eric.

you have a couple of options:
you can find a FRC local to (have a peek online for locations) or go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp - you can give them a call they are most helpful
Good luck
