Hi doric, if you don't get a volunteer you may wish to contact the Archivist at Bowdon (with an "o" not an "e") www.dramsden.co.uk/ncfhs/nbi_details.htm (second listing on the page)

Hi Doric - hope the Archivist gives you the answer you need. If you're interested in the area there's some pictures (including Bowdon Church) on this website www.trafford.gov.uk/content/tca Trafford includes both Bowdon & Altrincham

Hi Doric Just to emphasise a point. Altrincham is/was a township in the parish of Bowdon and has been for a very long time. Now you are before 1837 think of Bowdon not Altrincham. Events in Altrincham and the surrounds should be recorded in the Bowdon registers.
Best of luck Regards Reiver

Pure speculation as I haven't access to the census - do you think the enumerator has become confused between Dunham & Durham? Dunham (Dunham Massey, Dunham Town etc) in Cheshire is adjacent to Bowdon (opposite side to Altrincham) and at this time it was in Bowdon parish. From my own family I think enumerators often wrote what they expected..... Durham & Dunham might be confused by someone expecting the former?

Thanks again Alli and mshrmh for trying to help me out. From what I have learned there seems to be three distinct lines of Westgarths - farmers in the Stanhope area of Co. Durham, coal miners in Durham and others in Northumberland, a few of whom have strayed to Yorkshire, Cheshire and London. It seems that one way or another they are all related to some degree and what is more confusing they all seem to use the same family names eg. William, James, Thomas etc. so it is quite difficult to match them to the correct families. My particular line is the Durham coalminers, but can only get back as far as my gt.gt. grandfather James. Durham were unable to come up with a marriage for James to enable me to find at least his father, so all I had to go on was census returns for Durham stating that he was born in Altrincham, Cheshire.
As previously mentioned I then found a marriage for a William Westgarth and Harriet Rowbottom in 1817 having taken place at Bowdon in Cheshire, followed by the birth of Mary in 1819 to William and Harriet. This led me down the road of thinking that as my James was born only two years later 1821, perhaps he too shared the same parents as Mary.
Again many many thanks for trying to help.
Doric

doric, Have you had a response yet from the Bowson Church Archivist? You say you have found the marriage of William and Harriett at Bowdon (1817) and also the birth of their daujhter Mary in Bowdon (1817). Was that from an on-line source? I didn't think the Bowdon registers were on-line/
Depending what response you get over the next couple of days, I'll check the Bowdon index and maybe the film at Trafford Library next week.

Hi Reiver,
As yet I have had no response from the Bowdon Church Archivist, but it is still early days.
The marriage details I obtained for William & Harriet (nee Rowbottom) were taken from Family Search IGI which showed the marriage taking place on 22nd December, 1817 at Bowdon.
The birth, on rechecking was actually a christening for Mary Westgarth taking place on 6th June, 1819 at St. George's, Altrincham. It gives her parents as William and Harriet Westgarth.
Thankyou for offering to do a check for me if need be, and in which case if any costs should be incurred, I would be more than willing to reimburse if you let me know by private mail.
Again many many thanks for your help.
Doric

Hi Doric Your mention of seeing a baptism at St. George's made me check a small book written about St. George's not too long ago. I had a look on familysearch for the baptism but could not find it.
St George's was consecrated as a Chapel-of-ease (in the parish of Bowdon) in 1799. Being a chapel-of-ease enabled baptisms to be carried out but not marriages. They remained in the hands of the Parish Church (Bowdon). St Georges beame a parish church in its own right (Altrincham) in 1868.
The first baptismal entry was on 8th December 1799.
